Do they do it for the trans in our cars? N.B. it's the 6HP26 not the 5HP24.

BTW, I don't see how it would be possible, bearing in mind how you get the right fill on the 6HP26.

The dipstick is a nice idea but looking at the link I don't see how it could work on the 6 speed. There is no connection on the transmission case like the ZF 5 speed has. You would need to come up with a different spot to attach the dip stick tube.

The same place that you posted the fluid link to sells the sleeves also, and don't forget the dealer.

Just thought I'd give first hand experiance with the Castrol Import Multi-vehicle fluid. I use it in my STR, and it's been in there for a while too. Two years ago did the drain and fill with new pan and sleeve (about 150,000km). Used the Castrol. Drove for about a year, then did another drain and refill, just to get most of the old nasty stuff out. Since then not so much as a hiccup. Done several long trips (3000km+) as well as lots of city driving and no problems, leaks, squeeks or anything but smooth. I'd say been about 40,000km since the initial change (about 190,000km on it now) and I'm not losing any sleep over not using ZF fluid.

when i did the service on my 98 xj8 vdp with 130k , i used a substitution for the esso fluid based on others' experience on this site and i dont know if it was coincidence, but the trans took a crap after 2 days. for me at least, i will ward off the bad joojoo with using the ZF stuff. makes me feel better that you guys had good results though.

Your 2000 V6 3.0 does not have a ZF trans. This link should help.

I drove a 2000 4.0 S-Type for many years and loved the car. Coming down from the mountains one day I lost top gear... limped the car home and went to the transmission shop the next day.

The car had about 92,000 miles on it and I had done about 40k of them. Did not abuse the car but its a Jag so it was driven well.

The gearbox was toast and I had it replaced. Am an aircraft mechanic so I went in the shop when they pulled the old one. Once the pan was removed you could smell the burned fluid in the box. Next time I get any car with a modern "sealed for life" gearbox the fluid will be changed on regular intervals no matter what they say. Thats a $2200 lesson I learned the hard way...

Am looking at a 2005 3.0 S-Type right now and thats the first thing that will be done if I get the car...

Your car did not have the ZF gearbox that's the subject of this thread.

S-Types do NOT have gearboxes that are sealed for life,as you can see if you go on Jaguar's tech site.

I started this thread more than seven years ago. Since then, many of us with the ZF 6HP26 have switched to Mercon SP ATF. I have been running it in both of our Jaguars for several years now without so much as a hiccup. Both vehicles have been drained-and-filled with it twice now. It meets the required Shell M1375.4 specs, and it typically costs around $7 per quart at your local Ford dealership's parts counter. It was the factory-fill ATF for the Lincoln Navigator's ZF 6HP26 back in the mid-to-late 2000s....

I have no qualms recommending Mercon SP for any out-of-warranty ZF 6HP26. Just be sure to follow the ATF replacement procedure (as described here on the forum in numerous threads) to the letter....

Does not matter which type of gearbox it is, changing the fluid is why I replied.

Well my factory trained mechanic showed me in the maintenance manual that he has that it was "lifetime fluid" in the S-Type. Now even he changes the fluid on a regular basis.

He's looking at a manual that must be at least 8 years (*) behind the Jaguar site. He should refer to the current information!

(*) because it was already saying to change it then when I read it!

He was looking at a manual that was current at that time. This was on a two year old 2000 S-Type, so this was in 2004!

Yes change the fluid and with both the Ford 5 speed and the ZF 6 speed the fluid level is critical! I have owned both transmissions and took both to well over 100K miles with no problems BUT I changed the fluid around 80K miles.

Both transmissions have the same filling procedure and yes it will require a pump and a temperature gun to measure the fluid temperature.

Mercon SP has proven to be a good replacement for the ZF Lifeguard fluid. I would use the Mercon product in the ZF.

While you can do the fluid change at home I used the dealer (Brutal) because I did not have access to a lift. It's pretty tough doing it on jack stands.

What is the point of referring to something from (no later than) 2004?
