Default Antenna not working on XJR-S 1992

My antenna has never worked and I have taken the motor out to inspect it today.

The mast is broken off and the white plastic cord (that is attached to the mast and used to pull it into the housing) was also broken. There is no sound from the motor when the radio is switched on or off.

I opened up the motor and pulled out the broken cord. There were no broken gears or worn teeth. I applied some new grease. When I was connecting the plugs back together I noticed one of the three pins looked rusty and slightly damaged (see photos).

After connecting the plugs back, I turned the radio on/off, and still no life in the motor. The previous owner said that "if I "hot-wired" the white wire to the fuse, it would work." The fuse is missing n the photo, but it was in place when tested.

How do I go about doing this?
Where is the wire to the fuse?
Would the rusty pin be causing a problem?

Any auto electricians that can offer some advice?

Thnaks :-)

I suspect that the reason no power is getting to the aerial is because the relay that switches it and is activated by the radio, is not working. Try to find this relay and you may fix the problem. On my car, and all pre-facelifts, it is in the gap between the exhaust tunnel and the outer wing, it has a line fuse and it is green and bigger than a normal relay. On your car it may or may not be the same; but there will be a relay somewhere.

Being an XJRS there may be ( not sure about facelift) additional wiring/components due to the spoiler and it's interaction with the mast.

On my XJR-S (92) There is almost certainly something hooked up to the boot unlock switch or the hinges, as once pressed and you start lifting the boot and the mast detracts. I suppose if that connection is lost it may assume the boot is open all the time and not raise?

Unfortunately my boot is absolutely full ready for our holiday otherwise i'd have a look around for you..

This is the relay unit on my 93 XJS that controls antenna powering up and down.

When radio is powered on the antenna is raised, when switched off there is a delay of a few seconds before antenna is retracted.

Hope this is some help.

Antenna now working as it should!

Got some help to test the relays and wires (motor is working) and to cut a long story short, we thought the problem was a broken sensor in the radio. I had pretty much given up so we installed everything back in place and I drove home.

Turned the radio on and looked in the rear view mirror to surprisingly see the antenna going up! :-)

I think the problem was, that when we were testing the motor etc. we had the boot open which I assume activates the relay to inhibit the antenna working???

Thus, no action with boot open.

Now on to the next item on the list :-)
