Default Radio/Screen intermittent problem

Sometimes I start the car and nothing will work. Radio/climate control/navigation. Screen illuminates but that's it ... frozen on the word Jaguar. I shut the car off and restart it and radio comes on etc. and all works fine. Any ideas?

I wanted to also mentioned I searched the forum and saw a similar post for the same problem regarding a new battery and battery tender. My battery is new one year ago. I kept a tender on it all winter... My local mechanic installed the battery and I doubt he followed the new battery install steps as mentioned - that said its been in for a year and this problem just started.

What year is your xk? The problem you cite is happens more with the 2007-2009 vehicles but also happens less often with the 2010+ cars. Your screen issue may be a sign of a deteriorating battery. XKs are famous for exhibiting and suffering from electrical gremlins such as flashing warnings, frozen screens and other electrical misbehaviors when the battery is getting old or weak.

A favorite solution is to acquire and use a battery tender, particularly if you don't drive your XK very often. Members of this forum use and recommend the CTEK battery tender which you can buy on Amazon for between 60 and 70 dollars; the 3000 series is quite popular. Very easy to install and to plug in. Hope this helps. Good luck.

It is most definitely low voltage from your battery, the symptoms of which are random, but among them is the symptom you describe. Solution: a CTEK battery minder (there are other brands but this one is excellent and is the OEM unit of choice- every luxury car manufacturer sells these under their own label, at twice the price). There is nothing wrong with your Jaguar except that you are not using it often enough or long enough!

Note that "Battery Tender" is a registered trademark of Deltran Corporation, a family-owned Florida corporation. Referring to all battery maintainers as a battery "tender" gives free advertising and a false impression of universal acceptance and quality of Deltran's products. Read the customer reviews on Amazon of Deltran's "Battery Tender Jr. " Caveat emptor - Buyer beware. I had a bad experience with that company and their customer service and don't recommend their products. Their products are cheap and you get what you pay for.

Many Forum members, including myself, recommend the CTEK brand of battery maintainers, which are also rebranded and sold as OEM accessories by Jaguar, Porsche, Ferrari and other high-end car manufacturers. There are, of course, other reputable and reliable brands.

Just my opinion.

Like coldpad, I am having the same issue...only in Satellite Radio mode for whatever reason. Twice in the last 30 days it locks while in SAT. I can flip to Am/Fm, but I can't change channels in SAT nor will it power down...not till I turn the car off and start back up.
Difference here is that my car has been on a CTEK since November. It was just at dealer last week for oil change and some recall work, but as I suspected, the dealer could not duplicate the radio issue.

Thanks everyone, however I'm not sure if you all read my follow up immediately after I originally posted. My battery is brand new (less than one year) and it was on a trickle charge the entire winter and stayed fully charged... so I really don't think its a dying battery. Does everyone still think it is?

I had this happen the other day, my BMW 650 used to do the same so I didn't think much of it. When the SAT is "frozen" it is really stuck on one station because the entire list is not available, for some reason when I click on the list of stations it is completely empty. I chalk it up as a SAT communication issue? Flipping to AM/FM or CD is no problem, all other functions work. The one station that it is stuck on works fine, although it doesn't show artist/song info.

After shutting down the car and restarting it later it showed up with the entire list. It has only happened once. In my BMW it would happen once a week, took it to the dealer and the updated the system, did some other work, but it never resolved the issue.

My view is that is most likely the battery, I don't know of the charger you use but I would get the codes checked for the failure. That will likely tell you the battery isn't being maintained effectively.

Good luck

It happens to me now and then without apparent cause - where it remains frozen with just the Jaguar screen logo and no control function. The battery is a few years old and it's my daily driver. I can't offer a fix but rather a workaround that seemed to restore function.... I disconnected the negative battery terminal for about 30 seconds to reset the electronics. Then, already in the habit of pressing power and then brake to start the car, I now wait an extra second or two for the screen to power up before starting the car. So far so good.

That happened to my 2008, the battery checked out fine by the battery specialists but the OBD codes showed issues it was the original battery unit so 7 years old. I changed the battery and for the last year no issues at all

Why did you post your Range Rover inquiry in this Jaguar forum? They're not identical. You should ask here:
