Default Something happened to this part...

Can't figure out what. Embarrassingly, too, I don't know what this part does. Sits right on top of the "V" at the front of the engine, has a cable running to it like an accelerator cable. I just noticed today that it was bent forward toward the front of the car, and its casing was deformed. There's also evidence of plenty of interference between it and the hood, like the hood has been shutting on it for awhile.

Part identification would be helpful as would anyone's opinion of whether this is a major problem:

This is the cruise control activating bellows, and that cable is attached to the throttle pedal. It will do not harm being a bit bent down, except your CC may not work. If you do not want the CC, the bellows can be removed, and the vacuum pipes blocked and the electrical plugs insulated off.

If you keep your cruise control you can also reposition that black shroud thingy. It is supposed to be on the underside of the bellows to deflect engine heat

Heh. I was lying in bed about an hour after making this post and it hit me what this was. Now I'm ashamed at my lack of deduction.

At any rate, the cruise on this car has never worked. I am not surprised -- Other than my first car (which was bought new in 89), I have *never* bought a car made in the 1980s with a working cruise control. I'm like 0-for-12.

I did the requisite checking of the fuse when I first got the car, and the fuse was fine. I rarely use the cruise on any car (probably because I've never gotten accustomed to it actually working ) so this is not a huge loss for me. I am modestly worried about it causing a vacuum leak, though. That was a common problem on my Mitsubishi Starions (common failure point was the vacuum teat on the side of the unit; it would either break off at the exterior of the CC module or up inside it, you'd leak vacuum everywhere, and then your turbo's BOV and other items would go wacko).

A common reason for that cc to stop working is leakage at the bellows/endplate joins. This can be easily resealed.
