Default Leather Color Code SEL.

So,

First question of the hour. I always swore by liquid leather (Leather Care - Gliptone Leathercare) for reconditioning jaguar leather with both their conditioners and leather dyes. The smell was just...... Yum!

It now appears after being in touch with their customer service, they no longer recognize the Trim code for USA cars which is a 2006 XJ8 with TRIM SEL. The reply was this:-

"Thank you for your further details.

Unfortunately we don’t have the Tan SEL saved under our database. Here are the tan colours we have under Jaguar:

1990s Heritage Tan ODY
Light Tan E type V12 SIII
1970s Tan
Hertiage Tan ADY
1960s Bright Tan

A local dealership of Jaguar can confirm whether or not Tan SEL is the same or similar to the ones I have listed above. Otherwise, to be supplied this colour we would need a sample.
Kind Regards"

So the question is. Anybody know a good second product that will give me the smell liquid leather did with the color matching dye? I'm not in the mood for trial and error lol. Thought I'd ask the experts

Thanks in advance

Jimbov8,

Thanks for taking the time. Have you used this company before and their products?

Yes I have. I don't use their conditioners as, like you, I prefer the Gliptone. Their colour dyes I have used and found them to be excellent. Just follow the instructions and you can't go wrong.

Thanks so much Jim. I just shot them an inquiry email. Yea'...there is something about the smell of Liquid Jaguar in a bottle you just have to savor.... lol

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Default Gliptone

Just as a matter of interest I used them to match the leather in my old Lotus, just sent a sample and got a perfect match back. There are no machines or computers involved he does it by eye and years of experience, and file of sample swatches. Highly recommended. Cheers Keith.

I had very good results with a kit from seatsrestore4u2. Although my leather color is NED they list a kit for your color at TOUCH UP KITS by COLOR, JAGUAR items in sel store on eBay!

I don't understand some of these codes and exemples... the SEL trim code in my car means Champagne, just the same colour as shows this page...but not Barley!

To give more confusion in the web, the Champagne colour hasn't any code.

Furniture Clinic's UK site will allow you to order by Jag color code (though apparently they want to pawn off "dark brown" on me instead of "Mocha (AMB)", which they want an extra 5 pounds for. However, their US site only seems to allow me to pick their default colors. Anyone have any experience with them in the US and color matching Jaguar color codes?
Or have experience with another leather restoration source in the US which matches Jaguar color codes? I'd really like to get my steering wheel looking pretty...

I've had good luck with Leatherique matching Jaguar color codes. Their website is ancient but when I've spoken to them on the phone they've been very helpful, and their products have worked really well for me.

If your steering wheel is black, Leatherique has a generic steering wheel kit with just the right amount of dye. The photo below shows the results on the wheel in our '93 VDP. Click on the photo to see the entire photo album of the process:

Typical disclaimers, no affiliation, etc.

Cheers,

Don

There may be - you might try calling your local Jaguar dealer and giving them your VIN to see if they can look up the color code for the steering wheel. Our dealer was once able to help me with the color code for the piping in our VDP.

Cheers,

Don

Unfortunately, my steering wheel is wood and "Mocha" leather (which obviously is the part needing repaired). While Leatherique's steering wheel kit sounds great, they don't color match them, and their "brown" looks like it would be too dark. Their kit #1 can be color matched, but it gives me way more than I'd need, and I'd need to send them a sample to be color matched, and since only certain items are that color and not the entire interior (the interior is 2-tone, with the vast majority of the leather NOT "Mocha"), it would be hard to find a sample to send them to match.

I spoke to the folks at the US Furniture Clinic, and they recommend their "Leather Colorant Kit" for the steering wheel, but of course, that's also not available in "Mocha".

Dynamixdyes.com WILL give me mocha (in their "Jaguar Leather Dye Kit Small", but I haven't heard of anyone who's used them, and it would have to ship from the UK. I think even with the international shipping, it's coming up to less than $60, thanks to the currently weak pound.

If you know or can learn from a Jag dealer the color code for your Mocha leather, Leatherique may be able to mix up dye based on the color code only. The resulting dye may not be a perfect match, but it will probably be close to the original color of the leather and an improvement over the current condition of the wheel.

Another option is to find a used wheel in the same color but better condition. eBay usually has several listed.

Cheers,

Don
