I noticed a bit of oil around the AC dryer. I know it has two o-rings under the hose fitting. Do you have to evacuated all the refrigerant and oil to change the orings or put in a new dryer? Thanks.
The oil (most of it anyway) should stay in the system. You will need to evacuate the refrigerant. You will get a face-full of refrigerant if you remove the connections without evacuation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEFORE you do that get under the car and inspect your A/C compressor. These tend to leak and are the lowest point in the system. What you are looking for is greenish/yellow oil staining. If the bottom of the compressor is not clean and dry plan to replace the compressor.
We are lucky on this because we share the A/C compressor with the Lincoln LS and those compressors are all over EBay for good prices. Be sure and get the V-8 version as it is a larger capacity compressor compared to the V-6 version.
In either case, replace the drier when you open the system. It's time, and exposure to the atmosphere won't "renew" it.
I replaced the dryer. ONLY 2 minor mistakes. Haha. 1. the hold down stud should be taken off the dryer for ease of installation. 2. The high side hose popped off just as I loosened the nut. Whoops. Yes, freon and oil did come flying out, but not nearly as much as I would have figured.
What was wrong? Before me, someone worked on this part. They put BLACK o-rings back in it. NO NO NO. All AC systems must use GREEN o-rings. One o-ring was gone thus the leak. Something ate it.
The refill took only one can and is in the green on the gauge. Yahoo.
I need to replace my Compressor (S type 3.0 2000) is there one better than the other?
Probably not enough to pay $500 for one when you can get one for $175. Comparing the parts I've purchased, the price difference seems to be the only difference. Ford/Jaguar put a lot of junk parts in these cars and the lower priced parts can't be any worse. I price shop everything on this car.
I believe that some of the aftermarket compressors are better than the factory compressors used by Jaguar for these cars. Our built-in-May-2005 S-Type's factory compressor failed in May 2010 so it lasted exactly five years. The aftermarket Omega compressor I had installed at that time is still going strong nearly seven years later....

I checked the compressor and it is the problem!
The leak seems to be in the hose connection area, like it is cracked!
I am sure it is the "O" rings, as I have not removed them .......yet.
This compressor is17 years old in May, (first owner) that is why I was asking about the Jag compressors being a better product, with your recomendations I will go with Rockauto
Is the LS V8 a better unit?
They come with a expansion valve and what I have read "if it aint broke dont mess with it" correct, just the drier
Some compressors that supposedly are interchangeable among various automotive models actually have different mounting bolt configurations. Be sure to confirm that whatever compressor you decide to order indeed matches up to your specific mounting bolt requirements....

Um, that doesn't sound right. How big was the can? I don't have the specs handy, but I think the total system capacity is around 750 grams, which is a little less than two of those small cans at the parts store.
Did you do a full evacuation first before the refill? Details here:
I have had an LS and an S Type and have replaced both A/C compressors. They are the same unit. Exactly 100% down to the casting numbers in the Aluminum body.
I have used the EBay ones and they work fine but I did have one start leaking after 2 years and decided to upgrade and use a Jaguar branded one that was about $200 more. Don't know if it's any different because again having them side by side I can't find anything different.
Your leak could be O-rings on the tube connections but the compressor is split in the middle and I think that O-ring is the leaker. But at any rate use new o-rings on the inlet manifold.
Just a reminder to use the V-8 version. The V-6 will bolt on but is a smaller capacity compressor and might affect cooling. Not really sure.
