Default Expensive rust

We have a lot of snow and salty roads here in Norway. Unfortunately. . the previous owner had tried to fix some rust in the rear wheel arch but it was a poor quality job and paint so I have decided to fix it properly.

After asking around at some autoshops that specialises in rust and paint they estimated a cost of around 6000 nok. Thats roughly 700 usd.
So I decided to start preparing the car and sand it down to see what we're talking about.
Leftovers from the old repair and the rust has dug deep..
I showed these photos to the workshop and they now say they must weld in a new piece. Basically the whole side from what I've understood. A big piece. . And the cost estimate is now 1600 usd. Around 14000 nok.

These cars are expensive in this country though. Prices start around 10 000 usd. So I guess it's worth it..
Should I just go for it?

I agree it needs cutting out and new metal putting in. But the price seems a bit high.

The repair panel is available for about 40 GBP in the UK. See an example here

I ordered the part and negotiated a better price. Approximately 1100 usd now including a minor rust blemish on the roof. I'll upload some pictures of the final result in about 2 weeks time.

If memory serves correctly, the profile of the wheelarch edge differs slightly between the Xj 40 and the X300. The repair section I bought on eBay was actually for an Xj 40, so I had a bit more work to do.
Just FYI,as the section you have bought might be OK. Unless you are a perfectionist it won't matter if they are fitting the entire arch, but they will have a bit of blending to do if they are just cutting out a section to repair the rusty section of arch on yours.

The new wheelarch arrived today and it looks like a good fit. The cat is now booked for surgery 20th-24th March. ☺

You were right, the edge is not completely identical but I have talked to the guys who is going to fix it and they said they could even it out and make it almost identical. They also said they are going to change the whole arch. I'm very curious about this and looking forward to seeing the final result.

Finally got it back. Very pleased with the result. Damn expensive but worth fixing. A bit dirty on these photos but you get the idea.
