Yup. I've seen that too. I've actually seen that on several cars. Don't have an answer as to why or how.

Nothing broken here. With that cushioning strip between the 2 pieces, it's clearly supposed to be that way. If anyone has one that is a single piece, please post photo.

Mine looks the same - complete with the foam rubbing strip between the two parts.

I think he is talking about the clearly broken piece in the back exposing the white plastic. Havent seen that but not looked either.

I believe he's talking about the area between the two red arrows below. Dead identical to what I have and, upon close examination, obviously so intended. I too just noticed it the first time just a few days ago and looked at it very closely.

If it's meant to be like that the finish is dreadful

Agreed.
But how many F-Type owners will ever see it?
Just a tiny fraction of "enthusiasts" like those on this board, and even then you have to remove the cover panel to see it.
I'm thinking the JLR beancounters decided it was not cost effective to fix this gap.

I clicked on this thread because a firewall/bulkhead crack would be a very serious thing......this isn't a crack as the other's mentioned, nor is it any part of the structural aluminum unibody....guess we can relax!

If you drove with the carpet pulled out it would look pretty dreadful too. Us engineers don't really care what anything looks like beyond what the customer can easily see. If its hidden and its cheaper/more efficient to make it look like crap, we'll go that route 100% of the time.

One thing that annoys me is that too many cars that don't have neat under wheel above pedal space. Would it KILL to put a plastic panel there? Yes, people actually see that area. Sometimes.

XFs and XJs have panels there, they are called "hush panels". But they are made of rather thin and flimsy carpet-like material, they don't fit all that brilliantly (they tend to sag a bit at the front edges), and they can be a real PITA to refit once you pull them out (as you need to do to replace the footwell light globes). On my XFR I left the driver's side one off for many months as it got in the way of the OBD2 port, and I never noticed any difference in sound or appearance when sat in the car. I fully understand why JLR decided not to fit hush panels on the F-Type.

I'm a ME and I disagree with that, I care about what things look like.

Apparently takes more than $100 to get thorough fit and finish. Does Porsche go the extra mile in these areas?

+1. As an ME, internal elegance is just as important to me as external aesthetics.

Not when you're limited in cost and packaging you don't. If it costs an extra $5 a car and 2 pounds to make something you can't see pretty, it's never gonna get done.

The finish of that part doesn't even look engineered it looks like a surplus piece has been broken off

I'm so glad I bought a car where something like this is even considered an issue! sure beats talking about frame cracks, cavity corrosion or bad piston rings! LOL

Not always so black and white, in the case of a Camry you are probably right, but in the case of a pagani you are wrong, in the latter case extreme attention to detail is paid to every part down to the smallest fastener that you might not see.
In the case of our cars there is a line to tiptoe. Yes they could have had a better finish on that part, they could have also improved on many other things but the car would have cost a fair bit more if that was the case.
