For sale is a 1987 Jaguar XJ6 sedan. I've owned the car about a year now but have decided to clear out a couple of cars (I have an XK8 also for sale on this site).

This car has roughly 140k miles on it and came to me last year with many upgrades already done, and then I've done more since then. There are many records from the previous owner available detailing the work that was done.

Highlights: Head rebuilt, water pump replaced, cam covers painted, all engine compartment connectors/wires cleaned and/or replaced, new injector hoses, new valve inlet seals, valves lapped, t-stat housing bolts replaced, cam chain retensioned, idle/timing set replaced, new carpet throughout, fiber optic upgrade for interior lighting, thorough brake work done. In all, there are about a dozen pages of printed material and this list only scratches the surface. Copies of the records come with the car.

The car has a complete set of seats from what appears to be a 1998 XJ8, meaning the car has lumbar adjustments, full power seats, etc., along with much more comfortable padding than the factory seats did in 1987. The car has an upgraded charging system (GM alternator), cold air intake, and the suspension is tight as a drum. I just got finished taking this car on a multi-state cruise of about 1,000 miles on some challenging roads and had no issues. The rear shocks at least appear to have been installed only around 7,000 miles ago. The headlights have been converted to the European layout, meaning the low-beam lights are 7-inch lights rather than the smaller 5.5-inch lights Jag shipped to the states.

Other items I've done since acquiring the car last year include a new left-side fuel saddle tank, installing a new A/C compressor and fixing a rainwater leak at the right front door. The car also came with an aftermarket steering wheel that I didn't like, so I replaced that one with a much better example.

The car is still missing a few items: Central locking has been disconnected (by previous owner), and the heater does not work properly. The heater core was recently serviced but there appears to be an issue with the switching system. I will include a replacement HVAC amplifier with the car's purchase. The paint on the hood and trunk will need new clearcoat soon but the other body panels are top-notch.

The car does not leak around the sunroof and has road manners on par with a modern car. I can find no rust to speak of on the car, at all. All chrome brightwork is top-shelf. This car was very much loved by its previous owner and if you're looking to do a restoration/update of a Series III sedan, you're about 95% of the way there with this one.

Sale price is $7450. It would easily be worth more if not for the mileage. I've owned three XJ sedans in my life and have been around countless others and this is the best example I've seen yet.

I should also mention that I have a complete dashboard in a box that we'll throw in with the sale of this car, not that the car needs a dashboard right now. The ski slope has been re-covered once but appears it will need attention again soon, but the main dashboard is in pretty good shape as shown in the pictures.

Love the steering wheel. What brand? Source?
Also, do you still have the old one? If so what did that look like?

 

The new wheel is an NRg leather-and-wood contemporary. I sourced it through Amazon but you can also search "NRg steering wheel" on Google and get other sources.

The previous wheel was actually some auto parts warehouse knockoff of a Grant wheel, with a Jaguar hubcap mounted in the middle of it (not joking). One look at the thing made me scared to drive the car because I don't think hubcaps are crash-rated in the event my face hit it. Here's the picture:

I've gotta admit to being surprised by this, but the car failed to make reserve on eBay and other than selling locally or on Craigslist, etc., I may be pulling this off the market. I'll entertain offers from our members here but may end up keeping it if I don't get legitimate interest.

It's really nice. You should hold out for a fair price or just keep it. If I hadn't just bought an XJR last month I may be considering it, just because of the good condition.

I had a 1991 BMW that I had gotten into near perfect condition which, in my opinion, was worth more than most people were willing to pay. I was patient though until someone came along and realized what a great car it really was; they paid my full asking price. They also got a great car.

 

Update: This car is listed multiple places now with a sales price of $4,950. That's basically what I paid for it plus the upgrades I did to it.

Hi Jess:

You mentioned you installed a new A/C compressor, so does the A/C work properly now? Does it leak into the cabin when turned on? Same question with the heater on. And sorry I can't find photos for it?

 

The A/C has no leaks; it powers up and runs fine. There are no issues with the freon (it's been converted now to R-134) or any of that. The issue is one of the blend doors is not closing off hot and/or fresh air properly. So if you set the system to max cool, you're not getting the full benefit of the cooling system, as it's having to fight warmer air being mixed in.

The problem also happens when you set to full heat, as the system can't close off the cool side, either. You can tell the heater core is getting hot water into it but it's having to fight the compressed (cool) side. Ergo, the system works OK until you get to extreme temps (hot or cold) and then it's no longer efficient enough thanks to blend door/motor issues.

The issues with the entire HVAC system are either electrical, mechanical or both -- but almost certainly not fluid/freon related. Servo sounds that should be present, are not present.

Update from 8/3 ...

Adding a note here to let everyone know I don't start neglecting cars when I put them up for sale (because I also don't stop driving them), I've decided to go ahead and do a full rear brake service on the car. It will eventually have new rotors, pads and calipers. I also completed a service of the e-brake cable last month even though it's not noted in the description of the car. Price isn't going up, though.
