That's what the Benz dealer told me about our C63. I don't buy it. By that logic cars in the UK, NZ, OZ would have the filler on the left side which would result in a bunch of design changes.
The best location for the filler neck was on my Dad's '65 220SE Coupe. The filler was located behind the spring loaded rear license plate bracket that was hinged at the bottom.
Another thing: The gasoline fill is on the right, not on the left. I've checked out other other cars on the highway and it looks like the overwhelming majority have it on the left. This could be potentially awkward because the car would be facing the opposite direction.
Both my vehicles have fuel fill on the right, and it's great. Fuel pumps are generally more open/available for right side fill - most of the lefties aren't into snuggling up to the pump and then stretching the filler hose across so they wait in line instead.

49 Caddy - the tail light pops up when you push in the reflector...
Just picked up a CPO 2016 R Coupe (Rhodium Silver with full Red Pack interior...stunning!) and drove it 1000+ miles home from the dealership. I didn't realize that the blind spot monitor was "intelligent". When the approaching-from-the-rear traffic was going not too much faster than me, the monitor icon in the side mirror simply illuminated when that guy entered what the software considers to be my blind spot. However, when the idiot was travelling very much faster than I was, the monitor icon started flashing repeatedly/rapidly way before the idiot got anywhere near to me. Somehow the software is able to sort out and identify the "threat" a long ways off and give warning far in advance. I'm impressed!
Oh - I really don't find that the Coupe has a "blind spot" at all, IF you adjust the side mirrors where they SHOULD be looking - way splayed out - and thus fully complementing the inside mirror field of view. The only blind spot is possibly to the immediate rear, when the rear spoiler is deployed, if it is a Lotus Super Seven behind you.
SCMike, you should be posting some exterior and interior shots of that color combo!
I definitely will do so, but still not cleaned up from the filthy 1000+ mile trip, mostly in the cone of Tropical Storm Cindy - hours and hours of driving in monsoon weather. Even in the midst of that, the R Coupe drew lots of attention in public: looky-loos doing fly-bys on I-20, noses pressed to windows in passing and passed cars, thumbs-up out of windows, crowds at stops. I wasn't expecting the attention. It dawned on me that with the rear spoiler deployed horizontally, no one on the road could see the "Jaguar" on the rear panel (except the truckers), plus the Black Pack 3 option obscures some of the external logos - I'll bet lots of people hadn't a clue as to what this even was.
I was also a bit nervous about driving the 550bhp monster through all that water falling out of the sky for hours on end. But no worries - the AWD plus rain/snow mode kept the R riding on the proverbial rails. Maybe the most stable car that I have driven at speed in the wet...
Something I discovered - driving at night, especially on a Friday/Saturday night:
Everyone wants to race. Around 1am+ so many have probably had their shot or two or a few IPAs.
Coming down Burnside in PDX last night and turning up 2nd I had no less than three red light challenges. From an AMG to a beat up Subaru. Massive revving and carrying on, burnouts - three honks - you name it.
Anyone from Portland knows that area is literally saturated with cops. I drove like an old woman with the active exhaust off. Lots of frustration from the other 'racers.'
No cops around by some miracle so my antagonists were hopefully able to have a nice evening regardless.
I was young, wreckless and ignorant once also so I just let bygones be bygones; live and let live.
