Question Mystery threaded rod behind transmission?

Looked at my transmission mount today and noticed there is a 1 1/2" threaded rod coming vertically down from the mount plate. There is nothing attached to it, but Jag would not have put it there for no reason. Any thoughts as to what it is for? I cannot find any reference or pictures to explain what it is there for.

But for the life of me, I don't know what the stud is for.

That's ONE part of your transmission mount.

The stud is where the central bushing/cushion fits

I call that the 'tongue'.

The tongue extends under the transmission pan and should be parallel to the pan. If not parallel the rubber mounting blocks are sagging or broken.

The mounting system is designed to allow the trans to move up-down a bit against the big spring. The central 'cotton reel' cushion limits the movement.

The two rubber blocks seen in the other picture are the actual 'mountings'

Crazy system. Too many parts and it's quite possible to assemble the thing upside down. Ask me how I know. Gotta pay close attention on disassembly.

But, it works !

Cheers

Thanks Doug,
The picture makes it all clear now. The rod that points upwards holds the spring and cotton reel but the "Threaded Rod" that I was referring to in fact points downwards and you can just see it in your picture. It is close to the "tongue" mounting bolt holes and is offset to the RH side. Yours seems to have something round mounted on it.

Hmmmm. Not sure; can't remember.

The pic isn't mine; just something I grabbed of the internet (and actually originated from this forum). Post a clear pic of what you have and it may ring some bells!

Cheers

One of my worst experiences! Bought a polyurethane mount from John's Cars in Dallas. Got it messed up and called John for help. It was upside down. Fixing it was not the problem, rather it was realizing that I am an incompetent idiot, as John is wont to point out.

Decades ago, I read a Hemmings publication. Joh from John's cars and Jim from Sun Coast. Each knee deep in the Jaguar business had a running "debate".

Yup, along the lines of Joh's talk with Bob.

Although I may have deserved it during my conversion, John and all his crew were quite pleasant and of immense help.

But, just a read of John's manuals shows what he is like.

Thanks Doug,
The picture I posted is what I have and you can clearly see the "stud" pointing downwards. I cannot believe it's there for no good purpose. Perhaps a shield or cover of some sort? I've re-attached it below.

I'm stumped.

Foggy memory disclosure here but I've seen some exhaust supports attached in the transmission area.....but I can't remember exactly. Just a strap of metal maybe 6" long, with small rubber cushions at each end. One end attached to a clamp on the exhaust pipe, the other end attaches to 'something in the transmission area'....

Rather lightweight and flimsy; can't imagine it doing much good. Perhaps more to position the exhaust pipe rather than support it. Wouldn't be surprised if many have fallen off, or were thrown away, over the decades.

Cheers

Yup, sorta. I have a dim "recollection" of that strap and rubber cushions for the exhaust pipe! And a "discussion" of it's usefulness on J-L, a decade or so ago.

Although the mount is surely the "long way home", I just have to admire the idea and the execution. Almost "Rube Goldberg".

Gotta get on to my Black exhaust smoke issue on the Jaguar. I've a diagnostic plan forming up. And possible sources to confirm or reject.
Some of which learned here. Albeit on a different engine.

In older days, Id rebuild the carb/s. Leaking floats or level too high?
Alas or not, no carb/s!!

But, I do have an OBD I scanner!!!!

Jaguar motto: never use two parts when twelve will do the job perfectly well

I'm generally philosophic (and even amused) about Jaguar foibles ("interesting design features") but the transmission mounts have always been a head shaker for me. I understand the concerns about isolating noise and vibration but, honestly, there's no need for the complexity. American luxury cars got perfectly smooth results with (essentially) a single chunk of rubber betwixt the transmission and the cross-member.

Is not the Jaguar mount essentially two chunks of rubber. Vertical + lateral? The coil sprig and the Bits of steel just cuz? , If one assembled it sans the sprig, it might do just as well?

Why? Same as you.

Jaguar black smoke to diagnose and fix later. Summer temps for one last time, winter just around the corner...
