When I was trying to look for a place for my controller, I took a look at the space behind the sunvisor. There is quite a bit of space up there and if the install is done right, you may even be able to keep the sunvisor in place. Don't know what size gauges you are looking to put in, but if the purpose if for monitoring every once in a while, then the headliner would be much easier. Putting them in the middle of the dash places them out of the normal line of sight anyways, plus creates so much custom re-work. You could also use the middle speaker area. Just pop off the grill and create a little bubble for the gauges.

Project still not dead. On the upside, these turned up today. Custom forged pistons made from 4032 for it's low expansion rate and resistance to wear, and costed in phosphate and grafal. Awaiting resized conrods with ARP bolts.

Hi Dave ,

these piston look great . Did you order them directly from Mahle Motorsport or by
an other company ? Were they build according to a technical drawing or by suppling
a sample part ?
I can't imagine this packet being cheap ;-)

Ulrich

Hey Ulrich,

I ordered them direct from Mahle Motorsport - I sent a used factory piston to be laser scanned as a model. I'm not sure I'd describe the packet as "cheap", but I thought $200 per piston was pretty reasonable, given that a factory piston is significantly more expensive.

Hi Dave,

thinking about how many manufacturing steps have to be done and how many different
machine tools you need to build a high performance piston as an individual item
this price is a bargain for sure.
Did they built the pistons according to your (reworked ?) cylinder liner diameter ?

Regards
Ulrich

They actually requested the cylinder bore be honed to a particular size (3.643") which I had a machine shop do before the pistons were ordered.

If anyone could help with diagrams of timing, should I watch out for any things when dismantling etc. like in Mercedes m 273 engine, the timing sprockets have to. Be secured with pin, if not they will release the spring and can’t be reused! Any hidden tricks here? Also if anyone knows. Where I might get parts , used, new anything.... thanx guys.

In terms of timing, you'll be wanting One of these kits to lock it. There's a workshop manual for this engine kicking around, or available online. Parts are not available through Jaguar but can be sourced elsewhere, I've posted some links throughout this thread where I got bearings and conrods.

Did you check the kit that Dave recommended? Here is a link to one on ebay. I got one and its pretty good. I have not used it yet. Pictures of your tear down would be appreciated. How did you get the fuel injectors out? I'm at that stage. I need to change my head gaskets.

Service manual recommends what changing Head Gaskets to use one step thicker if available. Any body know if there are thicker head gaskets? So far I have only been able to get standard set.

Default Injectors

The injectors are impossible to remove without a tool,!! Too hard, you need a 🔨 tool,it hooks to the injector then on rod connected is a heavy peice, so it's like hammer in reverse.

the gaskets in jaguar are 2. Layer. And 3 layer, but in the end it goes to one number, and l get the thicker propably.

I've bought these head gaskets from Cometic for my rebuild. They are 4 layer.

After trying unsuccessfully pulling the injectors this is my next step.
I got this part and am using a slide hammer which is what I think you are
using too.

I'm glad there's three of us working on the 5 liter engine. We hold responsibility toward our Jag community to share tech info. Dave and you off course have advanced far more than I. Good luck.

Have a car that looks wise is almost in perfect condition, but needs a new rod bearing. I was SHOCKED to hear that you cannot just replace the bearing and Jaguar wants me to buy a whole new engine.

So shocked that I basically said I am done with jaguar. I have a post up for anyone who wants to buy a gorgeous car that needs a new engine, dirt cheap if you want it. Just trying to get enough posts so I can get it up for those interested.

But for how hard it is to work on these things including reading through this entire thread, it is sad that Jaguars seems to make "throwaway cars"
