The copper wire idea is cool. I will use sika flex 291 next time.
That stuff sticks like the proverbial!

I was going to use Sika flex but that stuff sticks so well I didn't think I would ever get the chrome off if I needed to without bending it. If you do use it I would suggest using it sparingly :-)

That is a good idea on the copper wire. I have been playing with the rear window chrome trim- my challenge at this point was getting the center clips to stay on properly.
Any suggestions on the proper glue to hold this all down? Sika flex looks promising. I was thinking about going and talking with a local windshield installer to see what they suggest- as I will need some for the front window anyway.

That thought did enter my mind. Then I figured I'd be dead by the time a refit came around. Not a good attitude in retrospect, we are all just custodians of these great cars.

This is true. Chuck is one helluva good example to try and emulate. I wish I had his knowledge and local contacts. I may just need to get more creative.

I wouldn't be as far along as I am without all the help from folks on this site. Other than that, I am just persistent. Like the 4 hours trying to get the down pipes installed. Perhaps some day I will be successful. Reordering crush gaskets. Which by the way, when sliced in half with a hacksaw, actually fit.

Finally a project that was easy- installing the front bumper. What a pleasant task. It was so enjoyable, I might take it off and put it back on again. (Just kidding). Got the front window in too, and now have to get serious about sourcing some windshield and chrome trim adhesive.



Windshield and bumper on today.

I have a lot of ***** in the air right now with the car. Interior trim, exhaust system, wiring, and fan belts. Fan belts are a challenge with the new AC system. Think I am going to use one belt off the crank pulls for the water pump and generator, and another belt from the crank for the AC system. I had an idler pulley from the old AC system, and was able to get a new bearing for it today. It was amazing. I went to a bearing shop with a 50 year old bearing, and they had the exact replacement- even the same brand. That was even better luck than the front bumper being so easy to install

CSBUSH the belts are a challenge even for the approved setup. Wait till you tackle the fan/radiator shroud--which you will need. This may help.



Although labeled as for an 'S' it is the same as a MK2/340.

I did pick up a shroud- then figured it would be impossible to install and set it aside. I have come to the realization that I will need to remove the radiator to get the belts installed, and I can give installing the fan shroud a go then.
Is your diagram telling me that I will need to trim up the fan shroud to make it fit? Neither of my cars came with one, so i am flying blind on this part.

It is not impossible but does take patience. remember the fan will need to turn to put the rad back in as the lower pipe fouls. As to trimming the shroud I had one that was cut decades ago when the AC was installed. It does match up to the drawing though. even with the pusher I see you will need the shroud. What fan are you using==you can not use the stock fan w/o modification. After you have all in make sure you study the fans path--for all of the blades! Good luck!

Chuck,
While I did not modify my shroud exactly like the diagram provided by George, you will find it necessary to make modifications. Clearing the lower double crank pulley and the compressor becomes an issue otherwise. I also gave up on the “remote” radiator drain tap rod. George is also correct in that you must turn the fan as you lower the radiator and shroud into place. It is all a nasty job. You definitely scratch up your forearms in the process. A helper can assist somewhat. All of that said, it can be done! I am afraid that my website “cooling posts” do not show the final modifications to the shroud. I will try to fix that.

Please remember the drawing is hyper accurate IF you are using the approved setup. For me that is the York two piston compressor and all 'original' bits and parts. Lin I did not give up on the drain but could have! Scratched arms are a must for all of this! In the end I was pleased and the rear air will chase you out of the car unless you dial it back. A lot of the engine heat from the AC is taken up by the primary condenser (under the car) with a secondary in front of the radiator. The original "chair" condenser was beyond repair but I saved it for "some day".

Is this an issue with MK2 ONLY? I have removed and replaced the factory shroud a number of times without any problems in my S type, remote radiator drain rod included. It is not easy
but it isn't so difficult either. No modifying it either.

Jose if your car is air conditioned and you have no problem I will make sure I hire you if I need to take everything out again. It is my understanding the engine bay of the S is basically the same as the MK2/340. If that is true and you have AC I am throwing flag on that play. The MK 2 as CSBush is finding out is almost literally 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag in front of the engine with AC.

It has been a couple of months with little progress as I have been on vacation and working on more pressing projects, Finally getting back to work. Thanks for all the advice on the radiator and shroud. I’ll take another crack at it when I get a chance.
I have been working on fitting the down pipes to the headers. What should have been simple had been a challenge as I can’t get them to fit without rubbing against each other, the car body or the engine. After a number of modifications, I gave up and ordered another rear down pipe- perhaps my first one was off. We shall see. If all else fails I can haul it over to an exhaust shop and have them do it

I the meantime, I have been working on installing the door rubber and doors. I have a question about the door rubbers and how they fit on the B pillars- does the wider part go to the inside, or tucked up against the pillar?



With the wider part of the trim against the pillar, when the door is closed, it seems to stick out a little, and I don’t recall seeing that in pictures.


Which is correct- the left or the right one? The left side has the wider part against the pillar. The right side has the wider part sticking out.

Never having actually closed a MK 2 door with decent rubber and door adjustment, it does have a nice satisfying click when it closes.
