Default Source for walnut trim (UK)

Hi, I am about to collect a 2009 XKR and prefer to put a traditional walnut trim in. Who are the most likely suppliers (I am thinking breakers, but who may have a few XKs in stock for parts)? Any suggestions welcome.

Also, is there a source to get a colour coded boot finisher (currently standard chrome, would be nice to match the Kyanite Blue paint).

Thanks in advance,

David

I am not sure how long Jaguar might have such parts in stock, but you could check your local Jaguar dealer's parts department.

I find they can be very helpful, but there is an age cut off where dealers might not have things in stock.

Since this wood trim would still fit in cars current to 2015, I would expect it to be available.

There are also users with wood that may want the finish you have, and a trade could be done.

David,

I changed the dreadful Jaguar aluminium trim console set on my 2007 XK for OE veneer. The aluminium had all the quality of an old Coca Cola can and belonged in the same place.

The Console Veneer Kit in walnut is still on Jaguar parts list (C2P14873) at just under £900 plus VAT. The oak option (C2P14627) is about £100 less.

The usual UK Jaguar specialist breakers (e.g. Eurojag at Darlington) are a possible source of used sets and they do occasionally appear on ebay.

Which aluminium trim was that? I'm quite happy with the knurled/dimpled trim I have, though it's of course subjective.

EDIT: Also my scale model matches my interior (aside from the model being RHD), which is nice.

Is this what you're looking for?

Just out of interest, what is the current veneer/trim set in the car now?

OE in 2007 XK Coupe.

Whoever dreamed up that thin stamping as an alternative to machined aluminium saved the Jaguar bean counters a fortune.

To OP; indeed best to buy the entire set from some car as finding matching veneer pieces otherwise can be frustrating. I lucked out when I bought a half-wooden steering wheel for my X-Type, but in the end never found matching veneer bits for the ashtray lid and gear lever surround. The few sets I bought were a mismatch.

I think some brochures did call it "knurled", but I reckon you're right and it's just stamped. Still, it's probably my favourite of the X150 trims I've seen, and it goes pretty well with the grey plastic bits around the vents and the gear lever. I've never been a fan of the veneer bit around the navigator display in the X150; maybe it's too modern a shape for a material like that. I do very much like the veneer trim under the instrument cluster and on the passenger airbag. I think this combination, as seen on the facelift cars, is a bit more subtle:

There is the base aluminum trim, then there is the spun aluminum trim.

The base aluminum trim makes the car seem more like a modern Porsche.

Not that its a bad thing, just if I'm getting a Jaguar I'd rather have something more artistic.

That is a very close match. However, It is from an early X150, I think and therefore lacks the two small pieces on the door panel, next to the switch pack. Thanks for the link. I may still be able to make it work and will think about how best to do that.

The two small door pieces, in walnut. Unfortunately ridiculously expensive.

The dealer prices for these parts are absolutely crazy. I had the basic faux aluminium plastic stuff in my car when I got it, fancied the piano black trim as in the 4.2 XKR-S, to buy the whole set from Jaguar would have been over £2k at that time. I managed to source a set in some sort of wood finish from a breaker for a couple of hundred and had them painted, not perfect but close enough. Unfortunately they're looking a bit scratched now so I may look at wrapping them.

Even worse, jitterbug, spun, radial, brushed (to some extent) are all quick fix techniques to hide tooling marks and skip subsequent finishing. Even the machine in USA is called a 'timesaver'. Further, it allows the final finish to be done in the same machine shop. as opposed to sending the part out for grinding, polishing, then anodizing or plating.

So hilariously its an exhibition of time saved on the lowest cost material, in a luxury car!

The premise of exotic lacquered veneers was to bring organic craftsmanship to an otherwise industrial space.

The reason aluminium is not used for a table or a chest of drawers is there is no inherit beauty in aluminium.

Only problem with wrapping is that if your existing trim panels have a textured surface (like the faux aluminium ones) then the texture shows through the wrap. I tried wrapping mine in 3M piano black wrap and it looked rubbish, hence I got a used set of gloss-finished wood trim from a breaker and had someone paint it and finish it properly:

Eh, aluminum has its own beauty.

I may have said it before, but the X150 is a design exercise in lowering the cost of building the car.

This is very noticeable when you compare the 3d volumetric profile of the parts that make up an XK vs a DB9. The higher the profile, the more expensive the part to manufacture.

They did a remarkable job of using low depth designs but angling them in such a way that the car appears to have far more curves than if you dissect its manufacturing design.

As a small independent, low volume manufacturer should, to be able to compete on the global stage with the likes of a BMW6 which is heavily subsidized by the country and volume. And they pulled it off, against those odds. As the little Island always has when faced with insurmountable odds.

However, I think this is a different matter, I believe Jaguar has been fighting on another front, how to transition from the pipe and slippers crowd to the trendy, and there its found itself out of place on a few instances by over compensating. Such as applying high tech interior aluminum to a car modeled after the charm of the Etype.

What does a 60 year old wear to a nightclub, now that its the scene.

This may be the way forward. At that price I can have a couple of attempts if the first one doesn't quite work.
I currently have a greyish oak (?) trim.
Thanks All, for your help, comments and pictures.
