SOS - Brady NE
Friends,
Is there anyone in the Brady NE area? I think my alternator is cooked in my 02 XKR, not something easily accomplished on the side of the road or on a road trip. Trying to figure out what my options are…shipping the car, an Indy, a dealer etc.
classic symptom of the whine after starting it up, then it went crazy saying battery not charging, I managed to beg it to make it somewhere safer and now no more whine, but the voltage is concerningly low running. The AGM in the trunk is only a few years old, I doubt it but you never know of course. I know it smelled terrible either under the hood or somewhere like electrical bad. I am trying to think of a way to test the battery but my brain isn’t working right now.

1) rent a car
2) have the Jag towed to the closest indie shop that will get you a replacement alternator and install it.
3) have them store the Jag until you can retrieve it.
4) after you have arranged for steps 1 through 3 and are in a safe place, get a stiff drink and sleep off the lousy day.
I’ve purchased $40,000 vintage cars only to have them break down 300 miles into the trip home. Bad things happen. It’s only a car breakdown. Thousands of them happen every day. Someday you’ll laugh about it .

PS / you are close to North Platte, a town of 20,000 pop. Any indie repair shop there should be able to get you a replacement alternator and install it.
there is an Enterprise Car Rental in North Platte and a regional airport too.

Great level headed advice that keeps it all in perspective.!

I’ve wrenched this car and my 308 myself, on this car from 38,000 to now 182,000 with 15 years of ownership. So yeah this type of thing can be a bit weird for me since I’ve had both cars coast to coast more times than I could count and could say have gotten lucky this whole time with nothing I didn’t fix myself especially on the road.
im looking for nearby folks that might have a rec on an Indy or someone nearby to feel out my next option, your PS helps about North Platte thanks.

* A TV movie from the television series Diagnosis Murder that features not one but two XK8s. It has an eerily similar plot. You can watch it here
