Default 84 XJ6 Key codes

I removed the ignition lock and switch from my 84 XJ6 to get a new key made. I then removed the switch and looked inside to find the key code but the paper had gotten wet. I was able to see 3 numbers but there appears to be a fourth number(?) that I was unable to read. Does anyone know how many numbers in the key code for this model? Thanks.

never heard of a key code on a paper inserted into the ignition lock.

Do you not have a key? zero? nada? 1980's XJ-6 came with a spare key hidden in the left front fender at the factory, look for it near the outer headlight, inside the fender/wing. enclosed in a metal mounting near the top.

however, by now mechanics, owners, and dealerships have removed them because they became a risk, (easy to steal the cars). So chances are you don't have it. What I would do is buy a new ignition switch assembly with new keys, probably cheaper than having a locksmith spend hours to make you keys that will always be iffy.

Default key codes

NO keys at all! Found this info(Removing Ignition Lock) at another site and tried it. Every thing that was posted was true and ignition lock/switch came out in about 10 minutes. Paper was inside just as said. I have not heard about key hidden in fender well but will look for that as well in AM. I'm the 3rd owner(still know 1st 2) so chances are good hidden key may still be there. Local Jag dealer quoted price for lock set at "about $700" for ignition, doors, boot and gas caps!! This all may be for naught as car has not run since driven into barn in 1994 and cost of restoration seems to out weigh the cost of a running/driving XJ6 by many $$. Rear end seems to be the most valuable part! Hate to part out but..... Still wondering how many numbers in the key code though.

Default key codes

Oh, I had all keys and placed them in the car when I drove into the barn in 1994. It seems that (according to my daughter) that they were taken as souvenirs at some point and all were lost. This has become a moot point as I will replace car with a running/drivable one and use this as a parts car or scrap it. Visited my local Pull-a-Part today and there were three series III there but no keys. What a waste!!! Hard to believe that there is no value in these vehicles. This is like having to put down a pet! I can't bear to watch.

I agree, right now you can buy these XJ for a song. But that is temporary, as soon as the economy becomes "normal", their price will go up. The Series 3 is now a certified "Classic". I'm sticking with mine because I couldn't find another like it and I know I would regret it if I sold it after owning it for 22 years, it has lasted longer than my first marriage!

I saw a used ignition switch and steering lock assembly with keys at eBay last friday.

On this 82 xjs the code starts with FZ. Then 888. But “locksmith” showed this code in his system, cut it and it didn’t work.. I have been trying for 4 weeks and 5 different “locksmith” and they can’t even make me a key for it. Yet burglars get in a million combinations safe in 5 minutes….

At this point it might be easier and faster to just replace all the locks. David at Everyday XJ can probably fix you up with a full set that has the keys
