I've just signed up here after lurking for a good long while - hoping I can add some value in some way, whilst answering a few of my questions! I'm a mechanical engineer by training, based in the UK, and I look after an 1993 XJ40.
For a long time I was collecting together information relating to the PDU system, and was keeping an eye out for one to buy. As folks will know, they are as rare as hen's teeth these days! A few months ago I was lucky enough to find a Ford FDS2000 system for a decent price, relatively near me. It was functional but tatty and dirty, and I've been spending some time cleaning it up and documenting how it works, with a view to converting it for use on the Jag. One big step forward was when I noticed that a very kind user of this very forum has uploaded copies of his documentation and software discs to Dropbox; naturally I grabbed copies of all this info pretty quickly!
So, if I have any information I can share, I will be happy to do so - but for the moment I have a question: As mine is the Ford system, the serial communication cables are all Ford-specific. I am going to have to make up a cable in order to connect to the XJ40's serial cable in the boot. This will have a Neutrik "Neutricon" connector at one end and a 14-pin CPC connector at the other. I'd like to be certain that I have all the internal connections right though - does anyone have the original Jag cable (3130-0756-00), which they would be kind enough to open up and let me know the pin connections on?
I have build a cable myself, and willing to sell if you are interested send me a pm. You do you still have the original cd drive with cd caddy or the later type with normal CD drive?
but I think it's currently in the process of being vetted by the admins, so it hasn't appeared yet. I see the reason for this vetting process but it sure can lead to conversations getting a bit out of synch!
Anyway, thanks very much for the offer - however when my other post comes through, you will see that I have already started building my own cable now. Then I saw your post about the cables you had made and it seemed like too much of a coincidence for me not to add a response of my own!
So, what I would really like is the pin connection from an original cable - perhaps you would be willing to provide that free of charge??
I have it mostly sorted, as I know what the four pins at the CPC/Car end are for, and I have a hunch about what pins are used at the Neutricon/PDU end, but I would really like a confirmation from an original cable. Also, some of the PDU cables I have are internally bridged across pins at the PDU end, so I would like to know if the 3130-0756-00 has any of this going on.
Regarding the CD caddy, I actually have both old and new! I had seen that you have been producing the boards for the later ATAPI CD ROMs, and before I got hold of a PDU I had always planned that, if I did get one, I would send you a message to see if I could purchase one of the new boards from you (assuming any system I acquired had the older board). However, when I got my system it clearly had a newer CD ROM installed, and when opening the box I found it has some "other" updated board which someone has obviously home-made at some point. This was a bit of a surprise, as the only aftermarket board I was aware of was yours.
My old and "new" boards:
No real markings on the new board except "FDS 2000 ATAPI DRIVER" and "SFC 02-2010", making me think it was made in Feb of 2010 by SFC, whoever they are!
I can confirm that it works anyway. As well as the old board, my system came with a very tatty old Sony CD ROM. I decided for the hell of it to try and recommission the Sony drive using some new Capacitors, following the instructions linked to on this very forum. It does not appear to have worked, unfortunately. But I can't be sure whether the fault is with the old board or still with the Sony drive.
I could see I had been tagged but couldn't see it in the PDU topic so searched your name and looked for messages and came here .
The board on the left is the old circuit board for the Sony drive with caddy, the board on the right is an ancestor of the board I am building. If you buy one from me you will get the same only the circuit board is green coated so you are good!
