Default Instrument Console

Suddenly all of my instruments in the console have stopped working including the panel lights. I have checked all the fuses etc. does anyone have any ideas please, i am ready to bang my head on the wall. I feel it must be an earth or live that must be missing.

There are only the 2 large plugs on the back side of it. Maybe they worked loose??

Does anyone have the pin wiring diagrams for the plugs on the back of the instrument console. I can't find it anywhere.

Hi Gerard,

It is pointless for us to try to answer your questions without knowing the year, model and engine of your Jaguar. It is helpful if you visit your User Control Panel and edit your signature to include these details so they show up in all of your posts.

Please let us know and we'll try to steer you in the right direction.

Cheers,

Don

Hi Gerard,

You can download the wiring schematics here:

Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1990

I seem to recall that at least one of the main instrument cluster power circuits passes through one of the fuses in the center console fuse box.

Another thought is that water ingress of the Central Microprocessor (CPU) is known to cause weird issues.

It's not difficult to remove the instrument cluster to disconnect, clean and reconnect the large connectors Larry mentioned.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks, Jerry!

Larry, you'll have to tell us more about the GMC now that you've mentioned it! I have another friend who has one he intends to renovate for use. I can't recall the year but it has to be in the same era as yours.

Cheers,

Don

Well, thanks for the credit anyway. My next thought would be the fuse or a ground as always. You might able to access the wiring up in the stickie section of this area, or that Haynes manual if it is still available here. Has there been any other work done in the area that could affect it?

Thank you, I managed to find the problem. There is a 24 way connector between the instrument console and the ignition switch and ther was a pin that had come out of the plug, just pushed it back in and all OK now.
Thank you for the wiring diagram Don! I would still be interested if anyone has the wiring for the connectors at the back of the console (with pin numbers)
Thank you all again.

Excellent find! I had a pin push out of an O2 sensor plug so that my code didnt clear. Very frustrating, yet inexpensive repair. Thanks for the update.

I had a pin pushed back in one of my Range Rover's o2 sensors, bothered me for ages, finally found it the week before I sold it. (good riddance btw )

I've had a pin back out of the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector on two different XJ40s, and I think I recall reading multiple times in the Jaguar documentation that this is something to check for when diagnosing electrical gremlins. It's just so rare that it's hard to remember to look for it.

I'm impressed that Gerard found his backed-out pin!
