B Jones, if you car is an S type like mine, if you hear the mechanism working, but the boot won't open, try lubricating the rubber stoppers on the underside of the boot lid. Mine were sticking to the boot sill, acting like suction cups.

On the other hand if it is an Abrams main battle tank then there is a different technique.
However, since we've lost the OP hors de combat I'll probably bin this thread tomorrow.
