fob key mania
Anyone enlighten me. I may well be missing the point - I have two keys for my Jag, but only one of them works at a time. If I program the spare the main does not work and vice versa. Is this the way of things

Not by design!
The sequence I have for X-Type programming is:
1 Insert key into ignition
2 Turn key to 'I"
3 Turn key "II" and back to 'I' quickly 4 times
4 Alarm system will chime once when key is back to 'I' for the fourth time
5 Remove key from ignition
6 Press any button on each key fob and alarm system will chime for each fob if it has been programmed correctly
7 Press unlock/lock/boot etc to make sure everything works
NOTE: every fob you have must be programmed at the same time although you only need to use one key in ignition.

small clarification using different wording ...
all fobs and keys to be used on the vehicle must be programmed during the same session.
any fob or key that is not programmed during that session is dropped from memory.
this is a security feature that is intended to account for lost fobs or keys.

I am most grateful for this advice. I assume I can now go and reprogram my keys together, using the ignition sequence outlined in this forum many times.

Thanks Graham I am now crystal with this.
