Question Noise/exaust mod regs

I've been looking up on this as I'm tempted to try a mod to make it sound just a bit louder. I'm not after a drone, just something a bit throatier under load.

From what I can tell looking at regulations though some things are "illegal" and some are "grey areas".

For example: Cutting out exhaust sections in the UK isn't legal (see Modified cars - what you need to know | nidirect)

Replacing the exhaust may pass by the wording though, e.g. installing a MINA exhaust.

However do you then need to find a friendly MOT tester because a jag main dealer will turn the car away at MOT stage, as it is louder than manufactured?

Our country does make some things so complicated. On the one hand we don't want excessively noisy fart cans everywhere, flip side buying a different car for the manufacturer's stock noise sounds seems daft, especially as they often now provide different choices at PoS...

Grr headache! Thoughts on a postcard please...

The MOT Inspection Manual (1/1/2012) states that to fail a car on noisy exhaust,

" A silencer in such a condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition "

It does not give as a reason to fail the test a removed silencer or resonator, only a removed cat.

So as your car appears to be a 2009, it would be the 2012 regs that apply to your vehicle, as they cannot retro apply laws.

Have you got a link to some official legalese on this one? It's not that I don't trust you, it's that I'm keen to keep the car fully legal ;-)

I can't find anything about them not being able to apply newer standards to older cars, bar classic cars, which this one isn't yet!
