It's him again. I had a quick PM with GGG (Graham, Moderator) and suggested I could make the updated East and West European DVDs available to the community.

My original idea was to charge a nominal fee of about £10 to cover the cost of DVDs and postage. However having mellowed with a pipe full of my favourite tobacco, a version of Exmoor Hunt, I had a sudden moment of inspiration.

I will copy them for members who PM me with their postal address; I simply request the member then makes a contribution to either the Royal British Legion poppy fund or Help for Heroes. This way no money changes hands and we all make our own contribution to my favourite charities around the time of their greatest need. Win win situation.

Your thoughts please.

 

Sounds like a great idea What about the legality ? What cars are you offering to update ?
The XK, X350, S Type, X Type have maps to 2012, the XK8/R the maps die out in 2003 earlier CD based systems are surely not worth the effort ? Like most manufacturers Jaguar sign a deal with a Sat Nav supplier and pay for disk updates that they then (have to ? ) charge huge amounts to update. This always ends at the end of the model range and no new maps continue after that
In most cases it is cheaper to go after market e.g. Google maps on your phone.

I have no Sat Nav in the XK and a 2012 disk for the S type that I bought on e-bay. I note that most of these ads have been withdrawn.

There has been no take up on my little scheme, so I won't bother to buy the DVD stack for copying purposes.
My discs were outdated when I bought the car, plus my aerial was dead, so I have replaced the aerial and sourced a cheaper disc from a very handy guy in Portugal. The DRM was removed so it enables me to copy the discs and burn new ones.

Pity, I thought it would save a few people a lot of money and make a few £s for the RBL.

 

If you're talking about copies of the official satnav update discs then you'll probably find you've had little uptake because what you're suggesting is illegal, unless you have written permission from the rights-holder of the content.
