2013 Cars & Coffee, Great Falls, VA - Katie's

The first Katies Cars & Coffee for 2013 was held today. Cold and clear, a good crowd showed up, with a good number of cars and people there by 7:00AM. It was 29F when I arrived at 6:15AM, and it got to 39F by the time I left at 9:00AM. Today was typical of the relatively smaller turnout during the winter, but the quality and variety was what we have come to expect. No matter what kind of car you like, you're likely to find something interesting there on a given Saturday morning. (The Smart below has a decal of baseball stitches around each side.)
Three Jags in attendance today - two XKEs and my XK. We need more Jaguars in attendance!

It was a day of suprises.
It was supposed to be a warm morning, and it wasn't bad (42F at 6AM), but it started out very foggy, and did not warm up at all during the morning. When I arrived at Katie's at 6:15AM, only one car was already there - Mark Franke and his son Joseph had arrived before me in their Esprit.
Only one Jag in attendance, since I brought my Lotus today. John R had his XK Coupe. It was unusual to have no XKE's there today. Plenty of other nice cars there today, though!
My personal favorite was the Lotus Omega a friend brought. A very rare, very fast four-door. It was, for a time after it was made in 1991, the fastest production sedan in the world.

A cold morning, but the start of a 3-day weekend meant a good showing.
What's nice about this time of year is that, if it's not raining or snowing, we have a decent turnout - but - there's still space on the lot, even for people who come as late as 8:00AM.
We had a very nice XJS there today, and an XJR. Despite the fact that there were 3 XK or XKR owners there that I know of, (including me) and at least one XKE owner, none of them drove their Jags this morning.
**We need more Jags at these events!**

One of the questions asked most about Cars & Coffee events is, "when do they stop for the year"? My standard answer has been, "if it's not actively raining, or if there's not significant snow, ice or salt on the roads, it's on". This morning was a great example - it snowed lightly, yesterday afternoon thru evening. My local neighborhood streets had about an inch of packed snow this morning, but all other roads were clear of snow, and there looked to be little salt residue left over. The uncertainty of road conditions meant this was not going to be a 'normal' turnout for the very early Katie's crowd. I got to Katie's, as I normally do, around 6:20AM. I was the first car on the parking lot, which is unusual. I'm used to having no less than 3 or 4 people there before me - Dave in his Corvette, Glenn in one of his cars, and at least another random regular.
Doubt about road conditions just pushes attendance later into the morning. We started having car people show up around 6:45AM, with more at 7:00AM, and still more arriving as I left, just past 7:30AM. In general, daily drivers are more commonplace, and would certainly be the norm if the roads are still bad. Still, you'll notice that someone brought out a RWD Ford Lightning truck - gutsy!
Questionable conditions may keep some folks away, and there will be far less cars, and few 'interesting' cars, but car people still come out to sit and talk about things automotive.
One last item - experience shows, if we had this small turnout this week, it will take worse weather to keep people away next week. We don't like extended breaks from our car fixes!
The Katie's morning crew today was Pablo, Gina & Matt...
No Jags there today... I spent a couple of hours detailing the XK's wheels Wednesday night, and didn't want to slop them up - yet.

Seen at Katie's today: This 2001 Acura TL!
Car Guy 1: Isn't that the '01 TL??
Car Guy 2: Yes, in the rare Laguna Green color!
CG1: I think '01 was the year Acura changed the NAV and radio controls!
CG2: None of the pretentious 'Special Edition' nonsense on this car!
CG1: Nope, dead stock. What is it that would describe this car's basic 'rightness'?
CG2: It's totally stock.
CG1: Absolutely. In a thousand years, this will be rare!

Northern, VA is a little far for us Richmonders to travel sometimes so one of my friends has started a cars and coffee here in Richmond. This weekend will be the second official meet but we get a decent turn out for starters. We had a true exotic, Noble GT, come out last week. So, come out if you can.

Cool thanks I'll definitely have to check that out once my car is ready to take on the road and hopefully on occasion I can make it up North as I imagine the wealthier people up that way have some really nice cars!
The first Saturday in February - it was clear, but 14F. Lots of salt on the road. Will anyone show up?
Yes!
A big showing of German iron this week, in addition to two Jaguars.

A cold, blustery day. It kept some away, but not all. A pretty good turnout of German cars, and three Ferraris there, as well as two XKs - mine and John R's. His Radiance Red looks very good next to my Emerald Fire.

You thought the weather, or roads, were too bad this morning for people to bring their cars out to Katie's. You were wrong.
Some of what you missed this morning (not to mention car talk with car guys...)
--Bob Collum
P.S.: Don't miss out again - come out to Fair Lakes (the Kohl's and Dick's Sporting Goods parking lot) on Sunday morning, between 8:30 and 10:30AM.

The last Katie's Cars & Coffee of February, and the forecast called for rain. Yes, it kept some people away, but we had a surprising amount of people show up. While 'daily drivers' were the order of the day, there were some interesting cars. Of course, the weather never stops us from talking cars inside Katie's.

After this week of cold and snow, a beautiful Saturday. As a result, people came out of the woodwork. A great turnout, with lots of cars we had not seen before! The first picture is the lot as of 7:45AM.
I saw no Jaguars there today.

For those who believed the weatherman, who said it would be cold and rainy this morning... shame on you.
It did not rain, and was well into the 40's, even very early. A pretty good turnout - here's what you missed.
You like English cars? Today, an XKE, three Lotus, two Morris, a Mini and an Aston were there.
The first picture is of the Katie's lot at 7:15AM.
