I'm out in West Chester, but am in and out of Philly a few times a week. Don't have an "S" type, but do have a checkered past with a variety of automobiles. Bear in mind that no matter how handy you are, unless you have access to a garage, tools (and hopefully a lift of some sort), you're going to be somewhat limited to the tasks you can take on. However, a number of fairly routine maintenance and minor repair procedures are well within the resources of a DIY'er.

A tune-up can be done without a body shop and, taking your time, should be a reasonable task for you to take on providing you have a basic manual (like a Haynes) of some sort. The tools you'll need are fairly common and inexpensive. $ 600 for a tuneup is way too much; your mechanic is probably living better than you are.
