Default Looking for NJ Mechanic - Edison, Woodbridge, New Brunswick Area

I am new to Metuchen NJ and I have a 1995 XJS and a 1998 XJ8 that both need work and will need long term maintenance. Any recommendations?

I could use someone very cost effective, especially with the XJS since they are always in and out of the shop. Plus I need to do the full tensioner/guide/chain replacement ASAP on the XJ8.

Any thoughts as well as warnings would be helpful.

Hey man,

I'm from Iselin, just a few miles from Metuchen. I do most of my own work, but for the things that I can't (or don't want) to do I took my '03 STR to Don's Jaguar Service in Flemington (listed in one of the above posts by one of their own). It's about a 45 minute drive from our area, but they are about half as expensive as the Ray Catena *********** in Edison, plus they seem to know what they are doing. Although the Ray Catena guys sell Jags, I believe they specialize in fixing Benzes. When I called once about a simple problem, they didn't seem to have a grasp on what I was talking about (not bashing, just sharing my experience).

I brought my STR to Don's last summer for a transmission firmware update, brake pads, and alignment. The car was there for two days, most of which was for waiting for Jaguar to respond with the updates for the tranny. I got some Subaru thing to use as a courtesy vehicle (not my first choice, but it was free, with gas, and it worked fine). The price was nearly half as quoted by the dealership. The guys seemed professional and knowledgeable.

If anyone else can add to the list of NJ Jaguar service centers, I (and James, I am sure) would appreciate it.

Default Don's Jaguar Service

Although I have no yet used Don's, I plan to take my XJR there soon for a drive belt replacement, coolant flush, etc. I talked to them while buying my XJR and the guys knew my car and were very willing to share both the high points of the car as well as being upfront about potential issues.

This conversation happened after Catena in Edison did the pre-purchase inspection. I just did not have a good feeling after the inspection as I had to wait for the paperwork etc. even though I had specifically requested that I receive it on Friday after the service writer left that day and I was trying to finalize a purchase on a Saturday. I even had to remind the service writer that I had not paid for the service after I received the paperwork .

Minor issues, but I want the place that services my car to be on the ball. The gentleman at Don's was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I am willing to drive the 45 miles from Manhattan just to get that knowledge and service. If the tow weren't so far, I would have him figure out my coolant issue that I am dealing with. Just my 2 cents.

Default Don's Jaguar Service

I took my XJR to Don's and they did a great job for me. They changed the drive belt, the supercharger belt, flushed and filled antifreeze and brake fluid, and diagnosed and repaired my low coolant warning (replaced sensing unit in tank). I also asked him to let me know if anything else needed to be done and he made no effort to upcharge me or perform any unnecessary repairs. All for about $600 including use of a free loaner for a week because I can only get there on weekends. The communication was excellent and he even washed the car before I picked it up. I will definitely use them again even though I have to drive about 70 miles. If you look on his website, there is a 10% coupon for new customers. Significantly cheaper than Catena and George definitely inspired more confidence than the dealer service writer that did the pre-purchase inspection on my car. Take a look around his shop and see the types and condition of vehicles being trusted to him. I feel comfortable recommending them to anyone looking for a good shop for what it's worth.

You're in NJ? Call Don's Jaguar in Flemington: Authorized Imported Cars Jaguar & Land Rover Import Foreign Car Specialists The guy George has never done me wrong. I used to get my STR serviced there, and I've been speaking with him lately to get some things done on my XK8 and X-Type. He's difficult to get a hold of at times, but leave him a message and he always calls back at some point.

Otherwise, I inadvertently found this interesting link on craigslist last night: JAGUAR MECHANICS DOING SIDE WORK SAVE BIG Not sure how much of a crapshoot that is, but interesting timing.

You could probably try Don's in NJ. Authorized Imported Cars Jaguar & Land Rover Import Foreign Car Specialists It's probably about a 45 minute drive from Bucks, but it's a 45 minute drive from me as well and I'm in NJ. The guy George does great work. They can be difficult to get on the phone but leave a message and they'll get back to you.
