$8000 off MSRP=Possible 06 X-Type buyer - w/ Questions
A local dealer has one remaining X that is discounted $5000 + I get the Ford discount, basically taking the sticker price of $38,800 down to a purchase price of $30,250.00 Sounds like a great deal for a great car. I am most concerned about re-sale. I tried a search on the term re-sale and got nothing in return, which I don't understand. So... I think Jag did a dis-service to owners a few years back when they flooded the market with cheap leases, which all came back into the re-sale market within two or three years. Since they are building fewer cars, and not offering super cheap leases, is there a chance that re-sale values will improve? I tend to drive cars for about 5 years, usually Ford products, but they are near worthless on trade. Anyone have any thoughts, either about the deal above or the potential resale? Thanks in advance.

First, sounds like you got a great deal...I personally got the (almost) the same discount and thought it was one of the better deals out there at the time.
I love the car and if had to do it all over again....I would...
Good point on the re-sale...as you mention....not good. If you're looking to sell the car in two years or less....don't count on getting a good deal. I come to realize that this is a LTA (long term Auto)
meaning...I'll probably hold on to it for 5 or 6 years and try to give it away to my kid or try and sell it for deposit money on a new one......would i buy another Jag or X type.....probably....Love the sexy look, performance and handling is a hoot too!
Good luck

If you shop around you can probably get a low mileage used 2005MY for $24000. Apart from that it appears a good deal as long as it is brand new (i.e not ex-demo). If it is ex-demo askthem to throw in the 6 year 100,000 mile extension to the standard warranty (they'd normally charge $1500 + for that, and it's no skin off their nose to do it). The Jaguar dealers have had a very poor year - X type sales are down 34% from last year, so you should be in a good position to bargain.
The resale value on X types is relatively poor, and will not improve over the next few years as many consider it to be outclassed already (in many objective ways it is - but then other cars are not remotely like a Jaguar, which is a unique and relaxing way to arrive....). I cannot comment on Jaguar's or their competitor's future plans for confidentiality reasons, but I will say thatthe X type will face even stiffer competition in the nextfew years.

it does sound like a good deal. on the other hand, thanks to all those "cheap lease cars," i found a 2003 with most of the options at 33k miles and excellent shape for 13.9k. buying a 03 to 05 might turn out to be the best value, if you have the time to invest in researching for used ones.

The car is not an ex-demo. It had 17 miles on it when I took it for a test drive. Oddly, it was built in July 06 and originally delivered to a dealer in South Carolina , then made it's way to Detroit in October (some sort of dealer swap, I'm told). I'm trying to decide between this car and an 07 Lexus IS 250 AWD. The Lexus is ~ $3000 more than the Jag, but I'm thinking that I'll get that back on the re-sale. Does my math make sense? If the Jag starts at $30, it will be worth something like$13.5 in 3 years (asuming 45% of it's original price). Thedepreciation,or whatever you want to call itis ~$16.5 My sense is that the Lexus will retain more like 50% of it's value, making it worth ~ $16.5 in 3 years. In both cases I've 'spent' $16.5 to own either car. Tough choice because I like both of them.
Thanks for all the prompt replies....

like they said, resale values are not part of the x-type. i picked up an 04 last year with a handful of options,23k miles and the facotry extended warranty to 75k miles for $16.5. my dad got an 03 with 20k miles, 100k warrantyand similar options for $17.5 about 3 months ago.
all that being said, i would do it again in a heartbeat. i have owned many, many cars in my lifetime and none have gotten the response that the jag gets. the jaguar mystique is everything you think and more. the lines on this care are way too sexy and i swear i have given at least 50 people whiplash as they turned their heads when i rolled by. lexus makes nice cars, but they don't have the appeal of a jaguar or the history.
for the next few days, as you drive take notice of how many jaguars you see, then how many lexus' (lexi?). to top it all off, unless they own one, when someone sees you in a jaguar the first thing that pops into their mind is usually "Wow, how did he get a $50,000.00 car?"

RE: $8000 off MSRP=Possible 06 X-Type buyer - w/ Questions
To get the value of a car, I use eBay. Here is the true value of what cars are selling for. If a dealer asks more than this for a comparable car, I use eBay as an example. I have gotten tired of them using the wholesale pitch with me when it comes time for a value of my trade-in. They have told me numerous times that I can get a car just like yours for $XXX at the auction. My answer has been, then go and get it because you are not selling a car either.
Enjoy!

Back in May I basically did the same deal you're thinking about. I found an 06 3.0 the dealer was offering a $4K discount on. Using my Ford supplier discount as well I was about to get a total of $7K off. I was trading in a 03 X Type 2.5 that I had on a 5 year note. The dealer's offer for my trade gave me about $2K upside equity as well - which surprised me, given the depreciation horror stories. I made up my mind that I'm going to keep this car long term - so I negotiated into the deal a 7 year - 100K factory warranty as well. Ended up with the new X at just over $6K under sticker with enough warranty to make sure I never get any ugly high priced repair bills on her until she's long paid for. Loved driving the 03 - my first Jag, and, the 06 with the extra power is even more enjoyable and entertaining to drive.
