I know this is an old thread but I am having the exact same problem with my 02 Jaguar X-Type 2.5. I have to shift to 2nd gear first, then 1st gear to keep the 1st gear from grinding. I also have to double clutch going into 3rd gear, or just shift into it very slowly to keep 3rd from grinding. Did the new clutch pedal assembly fix the problem? If so, where did you find the part? Please help!
