Question 02 x-type won't drive forward but will drive backwards ?

We have a 2002 x-type jaguar with a 2.5 it has an automatic tranny . That won't move forward but will go backwards fine. the car was in an crash. It hit the guard rail in the front corner and back corner on pasinger side . The front tire was not hit . just the fender took the hit . Then it sat for the winter till it went for body work and when we tried to drive it on the flat bed truck it fees like its in second or third gear . I just don't wont to go but it does move . Is there a way to check the line pressure ? Is it shifted by electric or is there a cable ? I do mechanic and electric work so I under stand the lingo . thanks for your time and any info .

st. clair, it is possible that the car is in 2nd gear right now. If the computer sees an issue with the tranny (internal mechanical problem or electrical), it will attempt to shift the tranny into second gear and then leave it there for the forward movement. It is possible that you shocked the tranny and something gave inside the tranny or you have somehow hurt the wiring going to the tranny. Without doing detailed inspections of the car, it is hard to say what it could be. Connecting up a higher end analysis computer should be able to give some clues as to what the computer is seeing which can lead directly to the source of the problem. By chance, is the ABS light on now?

st.clair, any tranny shop should be able to diagnose the tranny for you. As for rebuilding it, I would look for someone that is a bit more familiar with this type of tranny than "Ed's service" on the corner. As for the solenoids, you need to drop the bottom pan of the tranny to access them. So, you are atleast into a drain and fill of the tranny.
