2.0D Starting issue.
Can anyone shed any light on this issue, surely someone has had this problem before.
Once I park up and leave the car for say 10-15mins and go back to start it,
It runs for like 1-2secs and stops.
-
Then i go to start it again it fails and i get the coil light flashing.
-
3rd attempt it starts up fine.
-
It will fluctuate sometimes its fine, sometimes it starts 1st time, sometimes it starts 2nd time so on and on and its been like this for quite a while.
Parts replaced
-
Clutch, flywheel and starter very recently.
Injector Seals.
Cam Sensor approx 2 years ago
any ideas, it drives absolutely spot on with plenty of power.
Fuel pressure issue ? No codes on the ecu.
thanks.

Take a read of this 2018 thread right the way through to conclusion.......sounds similar to your issue, albeit that it is the 2.2D variant.

Appears likely it is an ERG valve issue, not reliably fully closing due to material buildup.

@foleyaxle I recently replaced my EGR valve - quick job (depending on actuator type) - but quicker test is to just unplug it and see if it improves the symptoms. You may trigger a CEL / Coil light after a while - but when unplugged, the valve should remain fully closed.
Do you get any clouds of smoke etc out the exhaust when it is acting up? It was a big issue at idle.

Hmmm, no I think if it's already blanked then a blockage in the exhause wouldn't cause intermittent issues I wouldn't think...
A long shot, but how's your battery health? I noticed recently when the car hadn't been used much that the idle was pretty lumpy but smoothed out once the engine warmed up (and no load on the glow plugs maybe?). It sounds like it's an issue sometimes even if the engine is nice and hot which would probably rule this out, but failing batteries can do weird things sometimes.

Got the same. Dying high pressure fuel pump. Although all the power was there and engine was able to keep on going strong, starting problems were arising when hot + this flashing coil. Complete rebuild of pump + injectors overhaul. If it is pump indeed in your case as well, worth checking whether you have metal particles in the fuel tank/fuel filter since this pump likes to die taking whole fuel system with it. After pump overhaul starting like a charm no matter the temperature. Anyway, this 2.0D Ford engine is crap, my first and last diesel ever. Cheers
If the engine started for several seconds, then died, it is probably not fuel pressure.
When cranking the injectors are inhibited until 230 bar pressure is met.
What diagnostic scanner are you using, codes should be logged ?
A generic scanner may well miss some p codes.
Paul.

@foleyaxle if you're ever down near Telford I have an LR2 scanner. Definitely worth the £140 or so that I spent on it, takes a lot of the guess work out of this rollercoaster ride!
I have the 2.2D (2008) and was having very similar issue .,
but mine sometimes cut out while driving .. serious problem when it happened on the main road
I was told there was a Known problem with HOT start with the injectors,, a software update fixed it
I couldn't get mine to the dealers , 13 miles away
so I decided I would take the injectors and high pressure fuel pump out and get them tested anyway ..
Long story short, I never took them out,
but took out the intake manifold, egr , fuel lines, and Fuel filter out . cleaned them(not the filter) , put them back
and not had the problem since ,
This was 6+ months ago ( I still want to bring it the dealer ship and get the software updated)
I am thinking it was dirt in the lines thb ,,, (Took the hard lines off that feed the injectors and cleaned them)
Not a big job to do either,, it all just a few nuts and bolts
