Default 2002 X type starter wiring help

Please help! I have a 2002 xtype 3.0. I'm having problems trying to get it to start. When I turn the key the starter does not engage. I checked the clear fuses and they seem to be ok. I don't know which of the plastic box fuses to check or how. I also found two electrical clips that aren't plugged in and I don't know where they go to. They come out of the wiring loom that goes directly over the top of the starter.

If anyone has the same model please look and tell me where these clips are going to. Help is much appreciated.

Those are unused on your car. They go to switches etc. that are on a manual transmission.

Cheers,

A quick easy check, if you have a voltmeter, and a buddy, check that when you turn the switch to start that the terminal on the starter with the little yellow wire gets energized (12-ish volts). If it does get the voltage, then it's probably the starter motor that's bad. If it does not get the 12 or so volts, the starter is not getting the signal to engage. Then the real trouble shooting begins.

Turn the headlights and the interior roof light on and watch what they do when you try and crank it over.

If everything dims out, you have either 1) a bad battery, or 2) a bad battery connection (at either end of either cable), or 3) a bad battery cable.

The X-Type is famous for eating both batteries and cables. If it is a cable, think about replacing both at the same time.

The quick and easy one to fix is a loose or corroded cable connection.

Thanks for the help. I believe the battery should be okay as it is only a year old. I charged it and checked the voltage with key in the on position. It read 12.25 volts across the terminals.

I then checked the voltage to the starter when the key was turned to the start position. No voltage. What should be my next step in troubleshooting?

In your first photo the plug with the 2 green wires... is that plugged into anything or is it a blank plug? I have the same wires on my '02 2.5L but the other end of the plug is broke so i don't know if there should be anything plugged into it or not

Check fuse #29 in the fuse box next to battery, its a 30a fuse. If that is good, check the relay, which is #10. I think there is a diagram on the underside of the fuse box lid. If not, its the relay ( with you sitting in the car ) front left corner. I have seen some issues with the fuse box in the past as well, on the bottom. I have also seen some issues with the solenoid locks up, but you since you said you have no power at the starter, check the fuse first. Switch ignition on and check at starter again.

f37 in engine compartment fuse box blows almost immediately. relays all seem fine. all other fuses check out good with visual and continuity testing. unknown cause of blowing fuse F37 in engine compartment really starting to irritate me. F37 powers EMS, fan speed control, speed control.

JRHuff83 - you have a short if it blows immediately. Check the bottom of the fuse box, make sure no wires are touching, and you'll need to work your way back through the harness to find the short.

You are correct, it affects ECM, Output speed sensor and Cooling Fans. Given that the cooling fans have been a known common issue, does yours have the original cooling fan module or has it been updated?
