Default 2003 Key Fob won't program

I apologize in advance if I missed a sticky or a previous thread, but I searched and cannot find one answering my concerns. I have a 2003 X-Type that we just finished putting a motor in, and finishing all the final little cosmetics so I can get it on the road. I replaced the battery to my key fob because it was dead (previous owner stated the car sat in a garage for 5 years with a blown motor) and when I try to program it I get nothing. I turn the key until the dash lights up, turn it back one notch, then go back and forth 4 times until I hear the chime. When I press the button (as instructed from what I read) I get no response and the key fob is still unresponsive. Is there a different way to program for a US market car? Or is it a dead chip (fob motherboard) or is there any other troubleshooting I can go through? Thanks in advance I'm glad I can be apart of this forum now.

Hi Meltdown, welcome to the forum.
It sounds as if you are doing the right thing, is the door closed when you are trying?
If you split the keyfob you may find black marks on the circuit board which will indicate erosion or damage and you can solder them.
Good luck, see if you get lucky and I'll have a dig for soldering info, good luck!!! Stu

Thank you Stu! I'm going to try pop the key open now and see if that's the issue. And yes, I have the door closed. Everything works as it should, but when I hit the button to finalize the programming it's unresponsive. Will let you know what I find.

So I popped open the key, checked the connection with a tester and the battery is getting power, the board is getting power and everything has power, no corrosion or broken connections but still unresponsive key.

That's good news Meltdown.
We seem to come across these issues regularly, are you near any garage transponders that may cut out your signal, ie interference?

This may sound stupid but you are removing the key after the chime and before pressing a button, aren't you?

Yes I remove it, press the button and still get nothing. I tried everything I could think of and still have nothing. It's too big of an issue for me as the power locking works with the key in the door, but me being lazy I prefer the keyless entry.

It's NOT too big of an issue, sorry.
