Default 2004 2.0 X-Type Sovereign missing ?

Hi all,

I'm new on here so please bear with me.

My 2004 2.0 Diesel x-type Jaguar Sovereign has started to produce black smoke and is missing / stuttering, it has also has gone from giving me nearly 50+mpg to around 34mpg on a long run, but when driving on the flat IE: motorway, after around 65 / 70mph I take it to 80+ and she seems to run fine !!!

Took it to my local garage and they ran several diagnostic tests but nothing came up, no problem codes Etc, they checked the turbo bit's Etc, so they then bypassed the fuel filter and took it for a good run using an independent fuel supply to the engine and it just performed in exactly the same way as before IE: missing / stuttering, they have suggested that it maybe the injectors but are not sure, so I am hoping someone on here has had this problem themselves and can help me rectify my problem, as she has been a brilliant car until now, I have had the car for 3 years without any issues till now.

Cheers.

NewbyAde.

2004 2.0 X-Type Sovereign missing, If your car is missing you should report to the police. Just kidding, may be a glow plug or injector, the reason it seem run fine on high speed, it still missing but the RPM too high, the missing tơ fast you hardly feel it.

Black smoke and lower fuel mileage...sounds like too much fuel in the combustion chambers. I think you've got deposits in your fuel injectors that are causing them to not close properly. I'd remove the injectors and have them cleaned and tested. Change your fuel filter whilst this is being done.

Thanks swingwing,
I had a feeling it maybe something to do with the fuel injectors, I have been driving the car for about 3 months with this fault and it's doing my head in that I can still use it to go wherever I want regardless of distance, but still have the stuttering / lack of power on hills and bad economy.
Should just buy a new set of injectors and hope that solves the problem once and for all ?
Thanks again.

NewbyAde, I wouldn't recommend throwing new injectors into the engine; they're quite dear. SNG Barratt's UK branch website shows this injector C2S30226 as 182.96 pounds each, plus 50 pounds each surcharge. As exchange they're about 50 quid less each. What I would do were it my car is give 'er a dose of diesel injector cleaner (pretty sure Halfords or the like has it), then take it out on the road for a spirited drive - a thrashing in other words. I'd also make sure my air filter element (C2S36774) and fuel filter (C2S27643) were in top condition. While I'm waiting to see how she responds to a bottle or two of cleaner I'd be searching around for a shop that specializes in fuel injector cleaning and testing. Since diesels are more present in the UK I'd venture that there's plenty of businesses that do that. You might find a vendor that sells refurbished injectors on exchange; buy theirs and pop them in, then return your old ones as cores. That way the down time on your car would be minimal.
