Key Chip Programming

Key Chip Programming
2004 X-Type 3.0. I have the 2 original keys but wanted to make a few spares. I purchased 3 blanks from Ebay and had the dealer cut them. They fit the ignition but will not start the car. The dealer wants a few hundred to program the chips. I have read that if I have the 2 original keys I can program the additional keys myself but I can't find out how to do it. I know how to program the remote fob but all I am concerned with is getting my 3 spares to start the car.

It is worth trying this, in case it works:
1. put working key in, turn to ign II, then turn off and remove
2. do the same with the other working one
3. repeat with a new key
4. then the next
etc
Don't rush but do them all fairly quickly as if it works it needs to have no long delays. Do not start the engine during the above.

IF the new keys you bought have the correct transponder AND you have 2 original programmed keys (not ones that have been paired to the car using this method) then those 2 keys will force a 3rd, 4th and 5th to the KTM.
You must always use the original 2 keys to configure #3, #4 and #5.
You CANNOT use #1 OR #2 and then any other key YOU configured to configure another. You have to use the 2 original keys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes you did say that but I was making the point that the original 2 keys must be used, not just one that will start the engine. The keys programmed by the 2 key method can not configure more keys.
Sorry to step on your toes. Just clarifying.

OK.... not meaning to derail the OP's thread here, but have a question.
Our X-Type came with just one key. I've ordered some new fobs with uncut blades to take to the dealer to have their transponder programmed to the car.
Once that's done. Would I be able to use the dealer's programmed keys as #1 and #2 should I ever want to make more? Just curious. If this all works out I'll have the original key and transponder, then 2 extras with new fobs (the original fob is beat and won't be working for much longer.)

ANY key that was configured to the car using the DEALER equipment can be used as Key #1 and #2. A key that was configured using the key-in-on-off, insert second key etc. will never be able to configure any keys.
You need a minimum of 2 keys for the dealer to configure keys. When the 'configure keys' screen comes up you cannot choose ONE KEY. It must be 2 or more (up to 5)
I believe you can have up to 5 with the X-Type?
(and yes I know about the aluminum foil shield trick)

X type transponder programming
hi I am new to this forum and have read much on Jag Keys. Particularly you guys that have taken the time to explain the difference between ( pairing ) making the four buttons work and ( Programming ) making a new key transponder work with a new key.
It is the transponder side of things I am interested to get to the bottom of.
What I have picked up so far is that it is expensive to have programming done by a dealer but at least you can end up with two properly programmed keys where as if you let one of the cheap mobile type of key guys do the job you could end up with a clone of your original key which your car looks at as one key and should you try to program a third key from your two working ones ! Could cause you real problems ( no disrespect to the mobile guys as they give you a spare key for a good price )
Now the question I have is, What is the correct procedure to program a third key from two known correctly programmed keys. The third key is cut to the required code and the correct Blank un programmed transponder chip is in the key.
Do I have to have the drivers door open or closed, do I have to have the hazards on or not ? ? What is the correct procedure please.
Regards Richard

The official Jag procedure says to have driver's door open. I don't have any idea if that will work with an unprogrammed transponder chip.

That procedure is for mating the fob transmitter to the car, and has absolutely nothing to do with the transponder chip.
