Default 2004 X-Type 3.0 Bad Gas smell inside car

I just recently got this car, and I got a great deal on it. So far I’ve just had to replace the hood latch assembly and thermostat. However, there is a HORRIBLE gas smell inside the car and it’s almost impossible to drive! I’ve taken it to a mechanic and they have no idea. I’ve read up on some old forums and saw something about some tubing by the rear passenger side tire, but I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue and what was the fix? It’s nauseating without the down and still pretty bad with the windows and sunroof open. It doesn’t matter if I fill it up or it’s low on fuel. I don’t see any obvious gas leaks on my concrete driveway so I am at a loss! Can anyone help a sista out?? lol

Not a fix but just something to check is remove the back seat lower half and see if someone has cut a hole in the floor pan to gain access to the fuel pump. If there is a leak on the tank and if someone has cut a hole they might not have sealed the hole back up good and it’s letting the fumes inside the car from under the back seat

Lets see if I can be of help. You don't list any complaint of stains from fuel leaking on the ground, so the most likely culprit is a leaking broken hose allowing fumes. First it is going to take a thorough inspection to find the bad hose/hoses. I am surprised that you are not reporting a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. So, first go to the link I have below. Scroll down to the very last item and you can download a PDF version of the tech manual. The go to the second link for SNG Barratt and download the electronic parts catalog. Between these two you will be able to see each of the components of the fueling system and there locations so that you can begin your inspection.
Let me know if you need more info.

Default Gas smell

So, we pulled up the sewer and yes someone had cut into the seat frame to get to fuel pump but did a $&@$ job! They not only cut about 1/4” into the top of the plastic gas tank but also the white bracket around the fuel pump. Not to mention there was a black wire that was naked and could’ve arced with the fumes and I could’ve went BOOM. They taped down the metal with AC tape and called it a day. The only option I have is to get some epoxy and seal in the cut in the tank. But because of the crappy metal cut, it doesn’t fit back correctly so the round seal in the center of the seat doesn’t seal either :/ so either buy a new gas tank ($$$$) or epoxy the cut which is about 4” long unless someone has any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I would try the cheap option 1st Robin. If it fails it has not cost much but if it works you have saved a lot of time and cash.

I’m glad I got you pointed in the right direction right off. Sucks to find out they did a hack job on it tho. One thing you can do is see if you can find another jag like yours in a scrap yard and cut out the same part of the floor that they hacked up but make sure you get it cut out larger to where you can cover yours correctly. As for the tank you can or should be able to get it sealed up. I would however after sealing it apply a small psi of air to the tank and check your repair with soapy water. If you have a leak even a very small one the evap system will start throwing codes when it runs its test
