X-type pads and rotors
I changed the pads and rotor on a customer x type and wrote a step by step guide with pictures for anybody that wants to tackle this job. Anything to add to the guide please say and criticize, I'm human :P

Most people don't know this but brake fluid should be changed every two years. You'll notice that brake fluid should be clear, but is very discolored after a couple of years of use. Sucking fluid from the reservoir flushes about 70% of the fluid in the system for new one. Sometimes when you have a spongy pedal this will solve the problem. I recomended it because I like to "prevent" rather than wait for problems to come up. It's just my style as a mechanic.

What a coincidence! I was looking for a thread like this, but I'm not really comfortable changing the brakes/rotors on it. Mechanic wants $450CAD for parts and labour to change the front out, is that too much?
Am I better off buying rotors and pads off ebay and getting them installed? If so, is there anything in particular I should look for? Like Jaguar X Type 02 03 9/04 Brake Rotors Pads Front + Rear | eBay
Its the front that needs the work apparently.

Wether its your mechanic or you that's going to do it make sure that the pads and rotors used are of good quality. We charge about 600 which is pretty cheap here in Miami because we use THE BEST rotors and THE BEST pads. When it comes to rotors you want to find a brand that is not make in China. Look for good quality ceramic pads like Akebono.

Tools required are usually (can't remember exactly) tire iron, ratchet with 12 and 15MM sockets (maybe a 10 can't remember the size on the caliper) a c clamp.

It is a fairly easy job, and unless you have five thumbs per hand, it should take about an hour (max) the first time you do it.
Think of it as paying yourself about $300 for that hour's work, versus paying that guy $300 for that same hour's work. And, the feeling of satisfaction in having done it yourself? - Priceless!
