2004 x type AWD clunking noise?
my X type has been making this loud clunking noise since i bought it November of last year, it mainly does it at low speeds, just wondering if anyone would know what it is? I don’t take it on highways much so i haven’t been super worried, but im supposed to be making a 900 mile trip soon so wanting to make sure nothing is gonna fail.
My guess is that something is hitting something else with each rotation.
This might be something on the wheel hitting something else or something on the axles hitting something else or something on the prop-shaft hitting something else...
Thus, I recommend to start with a visual inspection of the car from underneath of all moveable parts.

minttea, I second the prop shaft. I will go even as far as to say that you will most likely find a fair amount of play in the prop shaft bearing that is right under the front seats. You get play in there under load it will sit in one spot, but you get off the gas, it will go to a different spot, causing the clunk that you are hearing. Crawl under the car and grab the driveshaft, Attempt to move it side to side. If you can see movement, that is too much. I have a feeling it will be a very obvious thing.
The other potential would be the U-joints. This is a fairly easy check. Just have to get all 4 wheels off of the ground at the same time and put the car in neutral. You can then twist the drive shaft and then watch the various parts. Everything should move together. If you can see a part move then a split second later something else move, too much play, there is your clunk.
