2004 X-Type 3.0L AWD: Had to put some coolant stop leak in over the weekend. It worked, no more coolant loss, no over-heating. Today, while driving about 40 mph, the "check fuel filler cap" light came on. It's happened before. Then, about 5 miles further, the engine just stopped, Check engine, battery, oil lamp lights all came on. I barely had any steering or brakes. Managed to get to the side of the road. Turned the car off, checked the oil. Oil level was fine. Coolant level was fine. Took the gas cap off and then re-tightened it. I waited about 3 minutes, started the car up - NO warning lights at all, drove fine all the way home (about another 10 miles). My husband got out the OBDII reader and NO CODES appeared! I've never had that happen before - it was frightening! Any insight anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!! (I'm taking it to an import shop next week, but if there are no codes, don't know what they'll be able to do.)

Check fuel filter

 

+1 on looking at the fuel filter. Next what is your fuel level? Try it at a half tank or more. Last but a good possibility is a corroded battery. Simple start the car and then turn on headlights high and low beams, turn air to HIGH cool, turn on radio. Open doors, trunk and hood. Put the max electrical load on the engine at idle. Let it runs for a few minutes and try touching the positive and negative battery cables. Is one or both to hot to touch? If so your cable may have a bad connection or be failing. Mine was a bad connection to the ground cable a thorough cleaning and no more problem.

 

Our 2003 did exactly this as it’s fuel pump was dieting. I changed the fuel filter, just in case. Didn’t help. Eventually the pump died. A new one is in now 7 no more engine stalls or slugging on inclines etc.
