Default 2004 X-Type not starting

My brother in law gave me a 2.5 2004 X-Type he wasn't using. The car hasn't been started in over a year, and hasn't been driven in about four. He would start it every two week in his driveway until one day it did not start. I tried putting brake cleaner in the intake and it started however it immediately shut off after if finished using the cleaner. My mechanic (general) believes it's the fuel pump but is not sure. He checked all the fuses and they look fine, we also added 2 Gallons of Premium fuel to the old gas in the fuel tank. Any other things you recommend I check before shelling out $400 for the fuel pump? Thanks

Fuel filter? = inexpensive
Fuses?
Rail pressure?
Then fuel pump.

How old is the gas in the car? If it is four years old from when it was last driven, that could certainly be the cause. Maybe drain the gas tank and definitely change the fuel filter.

When you turn the key to the position just before it would crank can you hear the fuel pump go on? If so, it might not be the pump.

Good luck. Looks like a nice car.

I think the gas in the car is probably about 4 years old. My mechanic did not hear any noise coming from the fuel pump. I do hear clicking/ticking sound from this part. My mechanic said that noise is normal

I have seen too many times the "turn key, hear fuel pump" quote. Even in the dead of night, in an enclosed garage, everything turned off except the usual dinging when key turned on. I have never heard my fuel pump. Even lifted the back seat once to see if it was too muffled on mine to hear.

Don't know what to tell you, but when I had my X, I know I could hear it if listening for it.

Before changing out the Fuel Pump I'm going to change out the Fuel Pump Driver Module and see if it starts.

You said your brother only start the car every two weeks until one day the car decided not to started, just think the fuel sit in the tank for four years with moisture and cold and heat it might gum up the fuel injectors, that why when you put the brake cleaner in the intake it would run because it not go through the fuel injectors, that's cheapest and first thing you should do is drain the stale fuel, the gas tank is saddle tank; you should drain both sides of the tank and replace the fuel filter, take the fuel injectors out send them to some place to have them clean ( cheaper than buy the new set). Do these things to see if it start before replace fuel pump module and the pump itself.
