Default 2004:X-type: Tires/Rims - Will these rub?!

I'm looking for some advice. I have checked out a few car tire calculators, but I'm kind of worried about making a bad purchase.

I'm currently running 205/44/16s without any issue (stock)

I'm looking at a nice rim/tire combo and I'm terrified to make a bad purchase.

Will 225/40/18s (18x7.5 rim) rub on a 2.5L 2004 x-type with stock suspension (80k miles)?

Thanks!

should fit just fine as long as you have the correct offset.

I'm running 19" wheels with 225/40 tires and have no clearance issues with a +42 offset and my X-type is lowered.

My 2003 has that size, only rubs when turning while backing up. Outer edge of the tire rubs on the plastic fender liner. Go for it!

As long as your offset on a 7.5" wheel is between 30 and 50mm and you run 225/40/18, you will be fine - even optionally with lowering springs.

Thanks for the replies. Can someone explain offset to me? I sorta understand that it's the distance from the center of the tire to the bolt holes. But I don't know how to figure out what too much or too little offset is =\
