5 days of ownership and gear light already on!
He red gear light came on. I was driving at 70 on the freeway and suddenly it came on. Car started shifting a little rough on low gear.
Thursday the transmission was flushed and it had been fine until today. I went thru a car wash 6 hours before it happened
I turned the car on and of and the light went out.
Does this light mean an electric component failure or a level issue. The car took 8 or 9 quarts of fluid when it was flushed.
Any help is greatly appreciated !

I don't have any codes. I have an obd2 reader.
I restarted the car and now everything is back to normal and the light is of. I have been having horrible fuel consumption as well since I got the car.
I am already starting to get a little freaked out with this car. It's all electronics and seems unworkable like my older Jaguars.
If anyone has any clue on why the light came on please help.
The archives are telling me to look at
1-air leaks
2-TCM water ingress(where is it?)
3-TPS
Again, any help is greatly appreciated

I have seen gearbox malfunction messages and lights pop up a few times over the years but there was never a problem with the gearbox. That said, I never got rough shifting either but all by way of saying, the message centre on this car is a bit 20th century in my experience.
For what it's worth, the one thing I repeatedly had trouble with was a sticking throttle body butterfly valve which would manifest itself in various ways including DSC and Gearbox warning messages and lights, and sometimes an engine shut down - once at high speed in the outside lane of a busy highway. Not fun. I'm now in the routine of cleaning this valve every 6 months or so and so far, no further trouble. I have no clue if this is your problem, I suspect not, but cleaning up the throttle body can not do any harm.
As for fuel mileage, if you fill up and then just potter about town on errands for a while, it is normal to see the mileage go bad (like 17, even 18 litres per 100 km). If you get on the highway with a warmed up engine and drive a steady 100kmh, reset the trip computer and watch the gas consumption settle - if it still reads more than 10 litres per 100km, well that is when I would start to question what was wrong. Mine would typically be around 8 to 9 under those conditions (2004, 3.0 wagon).
I do hope these are just teething troubles for you - best of luck!

Well the problem has not come back, but I still do not understand why it came on an if there are any preventive maintenance I need to do.
Is there a water ingress problem with a module? I have had water ingress problems in the XJS and used some Nye ECU synthetic connector grease on the connectors to prevent any water in the connectors and prevent corrosion
Please help me out here with what needs to be done

Anyway, the light still has not returned and I have been running around.
Still very intrigued as to what caused it.

See this thread:

The TCM is located up above the fuse box in the driver side (USA) foot well. Several people have pulled it down and wrapped it in a plastic bag after experiencing the water ingress issue. Luckily that is one issue I haven't had.

Thanks so much for the link.
I felt around that area and everything seemed dry. Do I need to take out that knee bolster airbag to reach it?
I wonder if this is the reason the transmission feels a little strange to me. The shifting, specially in lower gear, is not the best I've driven, seems like it does not know where to go, I just assumed that's just the nature of the vehicle, but maybe it's the TCM
How is this transmission supposed to shift when in perfect condition? Is it a little confused normally or is it just my car?

I have noticed that the transmission shifts better in S mode and when the tank is full. Still have horrible gas mileage. Transmission shift seems specially pronounced from 1rst -2nd-3rd gears. It doesn't slip or clunk but its not as seamlessly smooth as other cars i have had where I do not even know i am shifting .
Is this normal behavior on these cars?
Light, still has not come back on
