What is recommended to get serviced at 70K miles?

First question: Was the 60K entirely done? IF it was then you're only due for an oil change and possibly a tire rotation.

What needed to be done at 60K? I don't believe I did anything other than oil change at 60K.

A 60K service is usually the 'big one', it includes all your tune-up items. A more extensive service will call for a brake system flush and a trans service. If a trans service has not been done, that is an absolute necessity. Once the trans hits a certain mileage it isn't a good idea to service it, usually around 85-90K is the cut-off point.

Okay, good to know. I think I need to get all that done. I'm planning on keeping it for some good years so I want it to be in good running condition.

I'd agree that the trans should be serviced at this point. However not servicing the tranny once it hits a certain mileage is a bad idea in my opinion. There are plenty of sides to this arguement, which is an old one, about old fluid and friction qualities, new fluid is too slippery and will blow up your tranny etc.....I have yet to find that to be true.

X: My friend that has run a transmission shop for over 25 years would absolutely disagree with your assertion. The trans doesn't immediately show signs of problems after a service, but later on down the road is when the slipping starts, then the failire rates are increased dramatically. No one is implying that the trans immediately 'blows' up upon servicing after a certain mileage.

That's cool, your friend certainly has his experience to lean on and he certainly isn't alone in that assertion.

Rather than engage in a pissing contest I'll just state that I have personal experience with dozens of cars and a few good friends with many years in the business and motorsports that see it as I do.

To each his own.

So with just hitting 70K am I safe to service the transmission w/o problems at this point?

I thought the transmission was sealed on this car? So what do they do exactly to service them? Just curious.

Hi gsd,

The tranny is supposedly "filled for life" on this car, which is total b.s. If you do a search on this site about changing the transmission fluid you'll find a ton of info and steps on how to perform the procedure. The dealership will do it for you if you ask, although you'll pay out the nose.

I had my trans serviced at almost 50k.. This is my DD and I felt it should be done so the dealer did a drain and fill. I will probably get it done again in another 1.5 yrs or so.

Next on my list is the transfer case and diff. Car currently has a shade under 54k miles.
