Angry Air vent and heat stuck

Hi guys, just joined the site and this is my first post

I have an x-type jaguar 2ltr d 05 plate. Classic D right hand drive.

Purchased the car a couple weeks ago and discovered that the air vents are stuck on face. I cannot change them to footwell or windshield, only blows out face vents no matter where I turn the switch.
To accompany this, the temperature is stuck on hot even with a/c on it will not blow cold, any advice on what the problem may be would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Scotty: Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of helpful advice and friendly people here. We're proud of our X-Types, and help each other keep them on the road, in good condition.

If you could, take a minute to tell us a little about yourself in the new member section:
New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

The problem you describe is well know, and not difficult or expensive to diagnose and fix in most cases. The hot air blowing at your face instead of cool air at the windshield or feet is caused by 2 or more air dampers that are stuck. Some people refer to the air dampers as air flaps or blend doors. They're in the air handler box under the dash, behind the radio, and usually become stuck for one of three reasons:
1) The actuator motor, also know as a servo motor or stepper motor, is not working, typically due to a stripped gear, or
2) The shaft that pivots the air damper is broken or slips when the actuator motor attempts to turn the door.
3) The air damper is simply stuck against the inside of the air handler box and needs a gentle nudge to rotate again.

Here are some useful threads in which other X-Type owners diagnose and fix problems with their air handlers:

As you get to know your X-Type, you'll also find useful information in Jaguar's Workshop Manual. A link to download a free pdf is near the bottom of the How To / Quick Links page:

Default fixed and thank you

Thank you for your response and apologies for the delay in replying. I have managed to solve the problem, although im not sure how I did it lol. I removed the centre console to take a look, hoping it would be something obvious and simple to fix, although I could see anything when removed. Put it all back together again and hey presto, its working just fine . Must have just been a loose connection somewhere. Thank you for your initial response, much appreciated.

Scotty: Glad it worked out for you. Sometimes the air dampers simply get struck in one position until you jostle them free. If it should get stuck again, try opening the troublesome actuator and examine the nylon gear for a single missing tooth. If a tooth is missing, the actuator will work fine for a while, until one day it gets stuck on that missing tooth. Hopefully not, but you'll know where to look if the problem should reappear.
