airbag seat weight sensor?

airbag seat weight sensor?
so the 02 sport has the passinger side airbag light come on when i hit about 115km/hr and turnsoff at 110km/hr but it also turns on randomly at lower speeds, my gf was in the passinger seat but i dont think she is under the weight limit, she is about 115lbs.
what is the weight sensors on/off mark? and is this common issue? i really think the airbag should be on for her in the seat.
its under warrent so imlookin for any issues big and small with the car, its going in the shop wednesday for some other things...any tips on what to check for appreciated.
thanks

RE: airbag seat weight sensor?
The passenger seat has a weight sensor and the sensor serves two purposes:
1) It will control the force the airbag deploys at if triggered based on the weight and position of the passenger to try and give the best protection and the least risk of causing injury.
2) It will disable the passenger front airbag if a passenger is not detected, or the weight is too low for a safe deployment. The orange light will be illuminated in this case.
The passenger seat weight sensor is not just an electrical trigger, it works by sensing liquid displacement to detect how in the seat the weight is distributed, and that can deteriorate over time causing misreadings unless they are recalibated.
The passenger weight sensor sometimes can misread (common on older cars). Taking the seat base off and reseating the sensor pad can fix this, but it is not an easy job. You can usually make the light go out by pressing firmly on the seat cushion for a second and releasing.
