Ashtray lid won't close 2002 xtype

Hello I have a 2002 jaguar x type and the ashtray compartment kid won't close. When I try to close it something clicks almost as if it will close but nothing happens it just opens right up. Is this fixable?

Depends whats wrong with it. Take it out and look at it. If its not repairable you can get a used one to replace it.

Take it out, and look at the little spring loaded gear assembly on the right side.

It is very easy to pop the gear past the stop, and just as easy to put it back in.

Likely a free fix, if not, easy to replace.

Take it out look at the gear assembly, play with it, push it close and see what happen, after a while you can figure out how to fix it, may be the pin won out it pop out of the guide slot.
