Auto shifter cable issues?

Auto shifter cable issues?
Hi.
Having problems with our 3.0 Auto, in that it's not picking up gear selection properly......mostly Reverse and Park but has lost Drive once too.
When in for MOT, garage said cable felt a bit slack and adjusted it, but think it's made it worse.
Was thinking about buying a new cable, but looking on here it doesn't look like they are probe to stretching.
Have gearbox fault light on occasion but my reader won't pick up gearbox codes.
Have downloaded Jag bulletins, re shifter reset/adjustment but wanted to check if anyone has any other thoughts or experience in this area?
Any help appreciated.
