RE: Automatic Tranny Fluid change
Just got a reply from Royal Purple on a compatible ATF for the X auto/Jatco
Dennis,

This is Idemitsu, K17 - Jatco 3100 PL085.
Used in the 2001.5 - 2004 X Type transmissions.

The RP MaxATF MultiSpec oil will work fine and be compatible with the OEM fluid.
Total fill is 9.3 quarts.

Cheers,

RE: Automatic Tranny Fluid change
Maxlife ATF is pretty cheap. I've seen it for ~$4qt at Walmart.
I still think you need to pitch this to Jaguar. Do you plan on doing this? I really appreciate the info you are gathering, as I really don't have time to do this right now, but would like to do a fill/drain during the summer. I'm not going to proceed until we get a big "thumbs up" from Jaguar.
Such a ridiculous situation this is.

Although it would be nice, I don't think a dealer service manager is going to endorse the use of any project of this magnitude, let alone approve a suitable product that they don't make (label) or sell. You may be waiting for awhile.
Now for Dennis, althought I wouldn't pay dealer prices for the ol' lube, I would trust a manufacturer like Royal Purple to match the dealer grade fluid. Still, around $100 for another 100k miles without service... sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
I like your thinking, and will tackle the tranny and differential on my XK8 with 67k miles this summer, or next. have't figured out when though. Keep us posted please.

Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill
Raise and support the vehicle
Place a suitable container under the transmission drain plug
Remove the transmission drain plug
Install the transmission drain plug & Tighten to 45 Nm
Lower the vehicle
Remove the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe cap
Use automatic transmission fluid WSS-M2C922-A1 or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification
Fill the automatic transmission with 8 litres of automatic transmission fluid through the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe
Carry out a fluid level check and adjustment
Transmission Fluid Level Check
Make sure J-Gate shift selector is in the Park position
With the engine running and the foot brake applied, move the J-Gate shift selector through ' P-R-N-D-4-3-2' and back to the ' P' position to circulate the automatic transmission fluid until the temperature reaches 30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F)
When the automatic transmission fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F) check that the selector lever is in the ' P' position raise the vehicle
With the engine running, remove the automatic transmission fluid level tube plug, Remove and discard the level plug and sealing washer
Use automatic transmission fluid WSS-M2C922-A1 or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification
If the automatic transmission fluid does not come out of the transmission fluid level tube the automatic transmission fluid level is insufficient. If this is the case add the automatic transmission fluid in 0.5 litre units into the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe until the automatic transmission fluid comes out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube
Remove the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe cap
Make sure the automatic transmission fluid temperature does not exceed 40°C (104°F). If the automatic transmission fluid temperature does exceed 40°C (104°F) stop the automatic transmission fluid level check and allow the automatic transmission fluid to cool until the temperature reaches 30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F).
Allow the automatic transmission fluid to come out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube until the overflow stops at a temperature of no more than 40°C (104°F).
If when the automatic transmission fluid level plug is first removed and automatic transmission fluid comes out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube, allow the automatic transmission fluid to come out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube until the overflow stops at a temperature of no more than 40°C (104°F).
Install the transmission fluid level plug, Install a new level plug and sealing washer, Tighten to 15 Nm
Install the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe cap
Lower the vehicle
Hope this help all of you that are planning on flushing trans.

RE: Automatic Tranny Fluid change
I agree in princlple with you right now...I've come across several forums with your question looming about this matter..so I know you want to be sure also, as much as me...I am still digging for more concrete answers than just a couple,to whether there will be any problems... Right now, I will be going with Royal Purple...I have made a few calls into tranny places and private Jagspecialists..and so far they all have said Royal Purple will be a great and compatible subsitute to the over priced Jag fluid....If you'll hold on, once I get a majority concenses about it..It should be a no brainer...
I doubt we will get an unbiased answer from Jaguar....My guys down at my dealer I know very well and they are allace techs that has been the same crew there for years..and on the sly, they have told me that this Jag ATF is nothing speacial and that Royal Purple will work just as well, if not better...But I'm not done looking into it yet
Look at it this way..As an example, almost everyone on this Jag Board here has changed their Brake Rotors and Pads to something other than OEM..Did it affect any braking qualities? Did anyone question it for safety, as this is the most dangerous area about the car's control and handlingto mess with..No. In fact, most will say that their brakes are better than OEM...So this can also apply to other aspects of the car too..

RE: Automatic Tranny Fluid change
There is a difference though Dennis between braking which is friction material generating heat to slow the vehicle and the internals of a transmission.
I agree though, RP should be fine but I cant say first hand. Also you are only required to use the Jag part number or equivilant. Doesnt say you MUST use Jag product, but must meet or exceed spec set by Jag. Good luck getting hold of their spec also.
Do you want the above trans post to be put as FAQ?

H20.....be very careful with your trans flush. The ZF trans in your vehicle is very particular about fluid. Which reminds me....do you have the hooting noise when you downshift or has that been fixed on yours?

As for the hooting noise, haven't heard it, but haven't manually downshifted too much. Will try tomorrow and let you know 'hoot...or NO hoot'.
Thanks for the tips. Great step by step instruction. Definately printing it out for the file. [sm=signs007.gif]

RE: Automatic Tranny Fluid change
Thanks for that FJT..You made it sound very sensible...Yes the Brakesare a different form of mechanics, no arguement there, but you also understand mypoint too, you wouldn't put on a set of Mercedes type brakes, if they weren't of the same spec.
I plan on doing a drain and refill at least twice within 100 miles..No flush..The Land Rover JatcoIhad, has basically the same transmission (Japaneses, not a Ford or a Jaguar tranny)and I refilled it initially with exactly what I drained, plus4 oz to account for evaporation and factory underfilling (can't go wrong there)...So there was no need for the tricky temperature fill method as described in the JTIS.

I hear ya..This statement I made, is of course with a tranny that has not appeared to be having any issues..Which mine isn't.
Just doing that PREVENTITIVE Maintenance that I preach about..Life time fuilds just don't sit well with me
So as a disclaimer..I am only conveying MY maintenance diary for sheer reading entertainment, nothing more.
