Default Bad news for Housegroove77

So I took my car in to the jag dealer yesterday for the howling sound i was getting
see these two posts;
https://www.jaguarforums.com/m_38354..._1/key_/tm.htm
https://www.jaguarforums.com/m_34597..._5/key_/tm.htm

the sound stopped wednesday so when i took it in they couldnt hear it. they diagnosed it as my TRANNY is on the begining of the end. he said it has about a year left if not less. [][:@][>:][X(] [:'(]
they qouted me for a new one $6,400
yes $6,400
and they quoted me $1200 for a tranny flush.

I am going to take it somewhere else for a second opinion. but it looks like i am going to have to trade it in. I am actually sad, i love my kitty. but 6,400 is half of what its worth.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhh [:@]

[sm=outcold.gif] OUCH!!!!

My two cents....I have an ML320...only reason I bring it up is I had a whining tranny issue also. My MB dealer said tranny is on its last legs....you will need to replace it (to the tune of ~$6K) I took it to an independent, he said it may be dying...let's change the tran oil/filter and check it again in 10K miles...that was at 55K..its got 98K on it now and still running strong....

Hey housegroove............c'mon man, lets not panic.

Ask advice from FactoryJagTech on here first.
At least its a worthwhile idea to try the tranny flush either with an independant specialist or perhaps, check out the write up on this procedure by BO in the FAQ section mate

https://www.jaguarforums.com/m_34418/tm.htm

I think there may be others too I just dont have the time to check at present......C'mon big guy we'll help you thru this. It may not be as bad as you think!
My X had 16k on her when I bought her and I traded her in with around 28k I think over the period of a year. Mine whined almsot since day one and nearly always when cold.....still going strong without a tranny flush......so BUCK UP YOUR IDEAS and lets get this prob sorted.
K mate?

Anyone live close to housegroove that could / would be willing to help with a tranny flush? Things like this might be a good way for the regional section to take off? Any ideas or suggestions from FJT / BO / or anyone please post it up!

Get a 2nd opinion and let us know what the shop says.

First of all, how the hell do they diagnose a noise that isn't there? Quote a transmission just because they wanted to take a guess?
There are too many variables with noises.
Any specific speed that this occurs. Any specific speed it doesn't occur? Does it change when you put car in neutral?
Does it change with speed? Any specific ambient temperature? Any specific time of the day? How far do you drive before you hear it? Does it go away the longer you drive it? Does it come from the front or rear? Are you sure? Sit in the rear and have someone else drive. Does it still sound like it is coming from the same area?
Please provide as much info as you can as I am not there to hear it. I apologise if I am making you retype something you already have, but I am trying to help.

Yeah housegroove hang on a sec and let fjt do his work...Besides I bet fjt would help you get a new tranny and even put it in ! How much it going to cost him? What about a new motor since that may go in the future since it makes a noise when its running...[8D]

Sorry, should have added, what fluid to use and where to find it. Everyone knows Jatco, but I haven't had any luck finding it. Even the dealership says they can only get their hands on a fluid that meets Jatco's specs, from some Japanese manufactuerer.

Anyways, I don't want to clutter this post with the OP's issue. Hope you get it resolved soon.

OK thanks to jimC64 and everyone else here on the boared coming to my intervention, i have calmed down cried it outand came back to my senses.
plus the horible snow i have had over here and the X-type plowed right throught it lie a snow god.

I have decided that i will keep my baby till the end of the summer and maybe get an S-type or an XJ or a caddy cts. I am hoping alot of people will trade in the xj or s-type for the new XF and the dealers will have flood of used jags. then the price will drop.

I would really like to stay with Jaguar but cause the two jag dealerships close to me i have had unpleasnt experiances with them i might have to loose my jag coolness and drive different make.

I am going to see how long i can go with my xtype, i will do the tranny flush once the weather warms up, or find a father and son mechanic shop to do the flush if the sound gets to loud.

i do thank everyone here for talking me off the ledge. I owe you guys a beer sometime.

seriously how could i drive anything else?

FTJ,

Dude thank you for the help.....the answers to your questions;
1. I dont know how the figured it was the tranny, these were the guys who changed my amp, cd changerand head unit, when the speakers were blown but never changed the speaker.
2. its from a stop in drive or reversei hear it when i speed up till about 20 miles per hour then it fade. Its very random the sound it happens when it wants to. and when i am turning left if the sound isnt there its will come again. but my go away on the next left hand turn.
3. i havent tried neutral. thats a fricken good idea, i will try it at my luch break if i hear it. (that why you da tech man!)
4. the speed the sound fade after about 20 mph
5. temperature, well when its cold it comes more, but after a day after it snows i hear it more. but with temp it happen when it dropped to -2 and it was there when it was 50.
6. time of day, its so random but more when i just start the car after i let it sit for 30 min off.
7. i hear it after a start, and some time 20 minutes later pulling away from a stop light, its so random.
8. the sound is from the right rear side, but it cant tell if is around the tire or before it.
9. i would love to have someone drive it while i stand outside but cause its so random that it will be there one second and the next its gone. and when its there for a while i wanst in an area that i would like to stand out side the car.

i thought it was the brake caliper not fully releasing when i let of it from a stop. but i am not even close to a mechanic, so its just a guess.

thank you for all your help.

THIS FORUM ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PM me your email address. I have some TSB to send to you about the noises you are hearing if they are from the rear.

I find your comment about the rear pads interesting. On cold , rainy days, my rear brakes moan really loud when I back out of my parking place at work. I've got an 06 with 29K on it. Have had it in to the dealer twice, and, they can't find anything wrong with it. I'm thinking about replacing the pads with aftermarket ones from Advance Auto. Is there a TSB that addresses this problem??
