Default bad transmission or transfer case gone bad

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my 2003 xtype. It turns out, the transmission on my car broke so I had it replace. It worked good for a week or so and then all of the sudden the gears will not engage at all. The transmission was a used one so it obviously could have been broken to begin with. My dilema here is I'm not sure if this could be a transfer case problem rather than a transmission problem.
What would be the simptoms of a broken transfer case? Like I said before the car doesnt work on any speed including reverse. There are no noises whatsoever it just will not Shift gears at all. Could have been that they spill the transker case fluid by accident?
Will a transmission fluid leak cause a car not to shift as a safety mode?
Can any one please tell me how to check the transfer case fluid.
Thanks in advance any input will be highly appreciated

Theres no way of really checking it. I would boy a quart of the transfer case fluid, jack the car up lifting the left side up only, and pour the fluid in till it over flows. If a lot goes in then you were low on fluid. If much does not go in then your fluid was fine and you have other issues. If this does fix your problem I highly reccomend doing a transfer case flush and re fill. Theres posts with pictures about how to do this.

With only one week since the tranny replacement, why not just tow it back to whoever did the replacement and let them fix whatever they didn't get right in the first place?

Thanks for your replys mr.xtype and rothe I will do what you've said about pouring fluid in to se if it in fact it needs fluid. To answer to yu question rothe like I've said before due to the fact the transmission its used they are not going to accept any failures on their part if any. That's why I wanna get some input to try to figure wether the problem is transmission or transfer case related.
Hopefully somebody had the same problem with the gears not engaging and could give some pointers to make sure I deal with the right problem.

My S-Type had similar issues. The tow truck hauled it away this morning to the garage that did a service on it three weeks ago. Did you ever find out what the problem was on your X-Type? Was there a solution to the malfunction?
