Default Bike Rack for a X Type Estate?

I would like to fit a Cycle Rack on my 2005 X Type Diesel Estate.
I could put one on the roof bars but I would prefer not to do that unless I had no other choice.
I do not have a tow bar or else would fit one on that.
Ideally I would like to fit it on the rear door but the top of the door is plastic I I doubt it would be strong enough?
Has anyone found how to fit a cycle rack to the rear door? If so what sort have they used - in the uk?
Thanks

Fred, spend the extra money and get yourself a Class I/II tow hitch and mount it that way. You will be much happier. No damage will occur to the body of the car due to the clips that need to be used and it will be easier to use when it is on the car. You should be able to get a hitch that is made for the car and bolt it on yourself (3 bolts (?) on each side). Then your options of what type of carrier you get is unlimited.

I accept that what you say makes sense - just trying to save money!

I agree with above. Tow bar option is the best. Very solid- great choices in bike racks & no chance of any damage to car. I have one on my Acura. Love it!

Fredd, you can get a hitch off of e-bay for around $201 delivered to your house. From there, bolting it up is pretty straight forward. No need to worry about any wiring as you won't need it for what you are doing.
