You may want to post your question on the UK forum as most members of this forum are from North America. Jaguar never offered a diesel variant of any vehicles in this part of the world.

Have you changed the fuel filter recently?

3 general causes of black smoke on a diesel:
-Injection pressure is too low
-Air leak- not enough air getting to the combustion chamber- this could be boost system related also
-Too much EGR being used for some reason

I don't know the specific idiosyncracies of the 2.2 litre diesel in the X type

Another very common oriblem (with excessive black smoke as a by product) is dirty and sticking turbo. See link and read all the links in the posts.

Default black smoke

the blacksmoke does just lst for the first few seconds of accelaration and then clears for a while until the engine is putunder strain or through accelaration

Hi. Might not be the same problem but I had this with a PUG diesel and the cure was to put a fuel system cleaner in the tank and take the revs up to the limiter for e short while. (lots of smoke) every couple of days. This cured my car. If yours is an auto you may have a DPF filter and this could be your problem.
